MOWRYSTOWN - Setting a Whiteoak record for strikeouts, Wildcat freshman Gage Carraher set the tone for WHS. Gaining 18 strikeouts in a complete game effort, Carraher led WHS to a 7-2 Southern Hills League victory over the Manchester Greyhounds Thursday.
The complete performance by Carraher was his first varsity start. He went seven innings, allowing just one hit and two runs (one earned). The freshman walked six batters.
"What a debut for a freshman in his first varsity start," Whiteoak head coach Chris Veidt said. "This came against a quality opponent. We tied them last year for the league championship and they have their nucleus back. We closed well again, scoring five runs in the last two innings."
In the game the Greyhounds took the early lead in the top of the second by scoring the first run.
The Wildcats tied the game in the bottom of the third and scored again in the fourth for a 2-1 advantage.
WHS (2-0, 2-1) gained insurance runs in the final two innings, scoring two in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Zach Docter led the Wildcats at the plate finishing 3-for-3 with three runs scored. One of Docter's three hits was a double.
Jesse Bradds went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, followed by Ben Barnett, Gage Carraher, Ethan Eyre and Mike Carraher all with one hit.
Barnett was 1-for-2 with one run. Gage Carraher finished 1-for-3 at the plate with a double, one run and one RBI. Eyre was 1-for-4 with a triple, one run and one RBI. Mike Carraher ended with a 1-for-3 effort with two RBIs and one run.
"Gage, Ethan, Mike, Jesse and Wes Stratton were all clutch for us at the plate," Veidt said. "Wesley's grounder with a man on third with less than two outs doesn't necessarily highlight the box score, but is very important to our game plan. It put us up a run in the fourth. Zach Docter continues to swing a hot bat as well."
WHS will play again Saturday in a tri-double header as WHS will take on Eastern Pike and Portsmouth NW, with game one starting at 10 a.m.
