Peebles wins by 7 points over Mustangs in SHAC contest

The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs hosted the Peebles Indians in a battle of two Southern Hills Athletic Conference teams, and it was Peebles winning on the road against LCHS, 61-54 Tuesday evening, Dec. 16. 

The score had only a one-point differential following the conclusion of the first quarter as the Indians led LCHS 16-15. PHS outscored Lynchburg-Clay 20-15 in the second frame for a 36-30 halftime lead. 

Peebles’ six-point halftime lead dropped to four points after three quarters with the Mustangs scoring 10 points and PHS scoring eight in the third for a 44-40 score. The fourth quarter saw Peebles score 17 points and the Mustangs score 14 points, allowing Peebles to gain the seven-point victory. 

LCHS had seven players reach the scoring column, led by Denver Clinton with 16 points, as the senior made a 3-pointer, six two-point baskets and he went 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. Clinton also added eight rebounds (four offensive), four assists, two steals and one block. 

Tanner Roberts followed with 12 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Roberts made six two-point baskets, plus of the 11 rebounds, six were offensive boards. Roberts also collected four blocks.  

Elam Faust totaled eight points off a 3-pointer and two two-point baskets, and he was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. Faust also had five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Quin Wells also scored eight points off four two-point baskets, plus he added four rebounds and two assists. 

Trevor Niehaus ended the game with five points, five rebounds and one steal. Linkin Barnett scored three points with a two-point basket and a free throw, and he contributed one rebound and one assist to his final totals. Scoring two points was Harley Lewis, as he also had one rebound, 

Totals for the Mustangs included 22 two-point baskets, two 3-pointers, and they were 4-of-13 from the free-throw line. They also had 35 rebounds (15 offensive), 11 assists, five steals and five blocks, plus finished with 12 turnovers. 

Peebles’ leading scorer was Bo Johnson with 26 points, followed by Paxton Ryan with 14 points. The rest of their scoring included: Grady Knechtly (1), Connor Gross (5), Josh McClary (7), Colyn Sims (2) and Keegan Puckett (6). 

The loss sends LCHS to an overall mark of 1-4 with an 0-3 record in Division I of the SHAC standings. Peebles now stands at 4-0 overall and 4-0 in Division II of the SHAC. 

LCHS will play next Friday, Dec. 19 at home against Blanchester in a non-conference game. Peebles is scheduled to play again Friday, Dec. 19 at home against the Fairfield Lions.
