WASHINGTON C.H. — The Hillsboro Lady Indians had a tough battle on their hands Wednesday evening in Fayette County, but the road team never lost the lead in the fourth frame, defeating the host Washington Lady Blue Lions, 57-47.

HHS saw their 11-point halftime lead shrink to just five points once the third frame was finished, as the improved Lady Blue Lions got to within two points of the Lady Indians’ lead with 2:23 left in the third, but HHS battled back, keeping a five-point advantage going into the fourth frame.

In the fourth quarter, Hillsboro led by as many as 13 points, but once the game finished, HHS held a 10-point lead to seal the Frontier Athletic Conference win.

The win lifts the Lady Indians' record to 12-2 overall and 5-1 in the FAC, currently second place in the conference standings. Washington moves to 5-8 overall and 2-5 in the FAC.

Hillsboro’s victory saw Kobie Miles lead HHS in scoring with 18 points, totaling five baskets from two-point range, and she was 8-of-10 from the free-throw line. Kyra Boyd was next with 16 points, ending the game with seven two-point buckets and she went 2-of-4 in her free throw attempts.

Also with double-figure scoring for Hillsboro was Tylee Davis with 10 points, as she’s scored no less than 10 points in all 14 games played by HHS this season. The sophomore made four two-point baskets and she went 2-of-5 from the free-throw line.

HHS also had five points from Peighton Bledsoe, who made a 3-pointer and two-point basket. Ella Jordan finished with four points (going 4-of-6 from the free-throw line), and Dinah Ames also scored four points with two two-point baskets.

The first frame started with Washington gaining the early lead with a 3-pointer a minute into the game, but Hillsboro quickly tied the score with a 3-pointer of their own by Bledsoe, as that was the lone 3-pointer made by Hillsboro in the game.

HHS built what became a 12-point run with Miles connecting with a layup, followed by two made free throws on a later possession. Next came a free throw made by Boyd, then a put-back basket, also from Boyd, with 5:15 left in the first frame for a 10-point Lady Indian lead.

The run continued with two more points scored by Miles at the 4:48 mark for the nine-point advantage in the first frame. Washington answered with four consecutive points, but HHS added to their total when Jordan sank a bucket for a 14-7 score at the 3:32 mark of the first quarter.

Again, WCH answered with a basket, but the Lady Indians had Miles make two consecutive baskets in the paint for a 18-9 Lady Indians advantage with 1:20 still left in the opening frame.

Washington's Eliana Racine scored a basket to bring the Lady Blue Lions back to within seven points of Hillsboro’s lead, but HHS ended the first with a free throw by Miles and a layup from Boyd for a 10-point lead at 21-11.

Washington outscored HHS in the second quarter by one point at 13-12, leaving the Lady Indians in front 33-24 at halftime.

HHS was first to score points in the second with a basket from Bledsoe, and after Washington responded with a basket, it was two points scored by Ames that lifted the HHS lead to 11 points with 6:35 left in the second quarter.

After another bucket by Washington, Hillsboro scored the next four points as Ames stole the ball at half-court and went to the hoop for two points. Then came a put-back basket from Davis for a 13-point Hillsboro lead with 3:59 left on the clock in the second quarter.

Washington’s Racine sank a 3-pointer, and teammate Calee Ellars scored two points, bringing the home team to within eight points of the Lady Indians’ lead at 29-21.

Following a Hillsboro timeout, HHS had two points off free throws by Miles. After Peyton Hughes of WCH scored two points from the free-throw line, Davis was fouled while converting a second-chance put back opportunity. Hughes made a free throw for Washington to end the quarter, leaving Hillsboro ahead by nine points at halftime.

Washington cut Hillsboro’s lead to six points with a 3-pointer at the 6:50 mark of the third, but Jordan answered with two free throws, and later at the 5:25 mark, it was Miles making a basket in the paint for a 10-point Hillsboro lead at 37-27.

Washington battled back, gaining the momentum with an eight-point run off 3-pointers from Aysha Haney and Kate Miller, plus a layup from Miller for a 37-35 score, but it was HHS still in the lead at 37-35 with 2:23 left in the third. The third frame continued with HHS scoring six consecutive points, building their lead back to eight points, and once the third frame ended, Hillsboro held a five-point lead at 45-40.

Following a talk with their coaching staff before the start of the fourth frame, Hillsboro came out of the gate to start the fourth with a strong effort, going on a 8-0 run as Boyd scored the first four points of the quarter, followed with a layup by Miles and two made free throws by Jordan, lifting the Lady Indians’ lead to 53-40 with 4:08 remaining in regulation.

Washington came back with a five-point run, but the game ended with the Lady Indians being fouled numerous times, with HHS going 4-of-10 in their final five trips to the free-throw line, and winning by 10 points.

Next for HHS is a non-conference game on Monday, Jan. 20 at home against the Blanchester Lady Wildcats. Washington will play again on Saturday, Jan. 18 on the road, also against Blanchester in a non-conference game.

In JV play Hillsboro defeated Washington 38-5. Hillsboro’s JV team was led by Piper Wilkin with 13 points, followed by Taylor-Ann Scruggs with eight points. HHS also had the following scoring: Dinah Ames (six), Peyton Gobin (five), Aubrey Burton (two), and Annia Young (four).
