Premier Showmen discuss quality assurance
Members of the Premier Showmen 4-H Club met at the Highland County Fairgrounds for a meeting focused on the importance of Quality Assurance in livestock care, an essential component of responsible animal management and food production.
The meeting centered on the critical role that livestock producers play in the lives of their animals, with an emphasis on maintaining high standards in food safety, animal welfare, and consumer confidence. Members learned how their daily decisions and practices directly impact not only the health of their animals but also the quality and safety of the food products that reach consumers.
Guest speakers Brian Cummings and Jake Osborn led the educational portion of the meeting, providing hands-on instruction and valuable insight into proper livestock care techniques. They demonstrated how to correctly administer injections, stressing the importance of using proper methods to ensure animal safety and effectiveness of treatment. Members also learned how to read and understand medication labels, including dosage instructions, withdrawal times, and safety precautions.
In addition, the speakers emphasized the importance of providing clean, fresh, and easily accessible water, noting that hydration plays a key role in maintaining overall animal health and performance. They also discussed the use of electrolytes, explaining how they can help animals recover from stress, illness, or dehydration.
Along with the educational program, members took part in creative activities such as designing posters and window displays based on the theme “From Clovers to College: 4-H Builds the Leaders of the Future.”
These projects allowed members to express their understanding of 4-H values while promoting leadership, growth, and community involvement.
Overall, the meeting provided members with valuable knowledge and practical skills that will help them improve their animal care practices.
