Hillsboro Garden Club meets
The March 2026 Hillsboro Garden Club meeting was called to order by Secretary Jennifer West acting as President for Lynn Luman until her arrival later at the meeting.
After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, the members sang "God Bless America" in memory of recently passed member Ed Davis. Thanks to Susanna Hottle Faraday for providing the music to accompany us!
The roll call question was "have you got a hot frame, greenhouse or window ledge with seeds started?" The 12 members and 3 guests in attendance admitted they were still in the planning stage.
The Tip of the Month was "housework is for people who don't know how to garden." All present were in agreement with this wisdom.
The treasurer's report was given by Ruth Anna Duff. Larry Moore was thanked for seeing to the repairs at Floral Hall. The outside steps and cracked concrete have been finished. Thank you, Larry.
The 2026 Region 16 Spring meeting will be April 8. Ruth Anna collected registration forms and payment from the members who will be attending.
President Lynn provided a number of handouts from Barbara Myers, and information on an upcoming native plant conference. Lynn also provided a beautiful "fox tail" plant as the evening's specimen.
Lynn reported that the 2026 Seed Exchange at the Hillsboro Public Library went very well. The library has requested the club offer a gardening program at the library later in the spring.
Judith Stivender updated the members about the upcoming OAGC state convention to be held at Deer Creek Lodge. The Region 16 officers had previously voted to offer a grant to offset the cost of attending the Exhibitors & Judges School. The E & J School will be held during the state convention. The grant is available to first-time attendees on a first-come, first-served basis. Two applicants will be awarded per year.
In new business the members discussed holding an open garden show at Floral Hall in 2027. The show would be open to all and similar to the Wednesday show the HGC holds each year at the Highland County Fair in September.
A brief educational program was given by Jennifer West on the Ohio Gardening Calendar. This will help with our plans for the upcoming year.
The meeting was then adjourned, and the members enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by Judith Stivender.
The next meeting will be the club's spring and plant-related items auction on April 28. Everyone is invited to join us. Here is your chance to bid on plants and items for your garden. The auction will start after a brief business meeting at 6:30 p.m.
