Hillsboro Garden Club hosts Spring Meeting

On May 10, the Hillsboro Garden Club hosted the Spring Meeting for Region 16 of the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs. The group welcomed OAGC state president Sharon Ware, second Vice President Peggy Case, regional officers and over 80 attendees from Highland, Warren, Clinton, Fayette, Madison, and Greene counties gathered for plant sales, plant education, club business and a buffet luncheon at the Ponderosa Banquet Center.
The meeting was called to order by Regional Director Judy Stopkotte and presided over by Hillsboro Garden Club president Larry Moore.
Nancy Baldwin, Highland County's Regional contact, directed the devotions.
Richard Westfall, an award-winning dahlia grower of the Columbus Dahlia Society, presented the morning slide show program, “Dahlias 101”, covering the planting, growing and grooming of prize winning dahlias. After regional business and committee reports were given, Sharon Ware was announced as the raffle winner of the hand-crafted flower-patterned quilt donated by Hillsboro Garden member Nancy Sonner.
The afternoon program was “Hosta La Vista, Baby” presented by Hillsboro Garden Club member Pat Lawrence, who discussed the beauty, diversity and infinite possibilities of hosta gardening and hosta giving.
Emphasizing the meeting theme, “We Can Dew It!,” 30 table decorations included watering cans planted with live coleus and embraced by toy stuffed frogs were drawn as door prizes. Each guest also received a flower pen made by Hillsboro club member Dena Benner.
The meeting ended in a song performed by the Hillsboro Garden Club members with special gardening lyrics by Pat Lawrence using the refrain and the tune of Bob Dylan's “Forever Young.”
The Hillsboro Garden Club meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Kathryn Granger Floral Hall on the Highland County Fairgrounds.
