Hillsboro Garden Club hosts educational program, meeting

The May 2025 meeting of the Hillsboro Garden Club was brought to order by president Jennifer West with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Lynn Luman took roll call with 11 members, including new members Lori Gunderman and Betty Ann Walker, as well as four guests answering the question, “Is your garden planted or ready to plant?”

The May tip of the month is as follows: However bare the lawn, grass will always appear in the cracks between the patio paving stones.

West provided the treasurer’s report in the absence of Ruth Anna Duff.

Nancy Sonner then presented her beautiful Kaladium (yes, this variety is spelled with a “K”) houseplant purchased from www.logees.com, a nursery specializing in fruiting, rare, and tropical plants.

Pertaining to old business, West asked for volunteers to serve on committees planning the Fall Region 16 Meeting, which will be held on Wed., Oct. 8 at Backroom Paradise. The committees include: registration table; creating centerpieces; sales table; door prizes/raffle gifts; meeting program; morning breakfast food/snacks; and finally, creating a list of local venues for attendees to purchase plants and gardening supplies.

For new business, Judith Stivender made a motion to award Larry Moore with a lifetime membership for his tireless work and dedication over the years to the Hillsboro Garden Club. Nancy Sonner seconded the motion, which was carried with a unanimous vote by all members. Well-deserved, Larry.

Stivender made a second motion that the current sitting treasurer and president be the only authorized parties on the Garden Club bank account. Moore served as the second to the motion. The motion carried with a unanimous vote by all members.

For the educational portion of the meeting, Sonner showcased several of her stunning Iris flowers, which get their name from Iris, the Greek goddess of the rainbow. The purple Iris is commonly placed in cemeteries, on tombstones, of recently deceased loved ones and friends, and it is said that the Iris guides that person to their final resting place. The white Iris represents purity and innocence, with the blue Iris means faith and hope.

Andrea Schneider made a motion to adjourn the meeting, with Moore as the second. Refreshments were provided by hostesses Carol Gorby and West.

The next meeting of the Hillsboro Garden Club will be Tuesday, June 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the floral hall at the Highland County Fairgrounds. West will present the program and Ruth Anna Duff and Teresa Cudkowicz will serve as hostesses for the meeting. The public is invited to attend.
