The Southern Ohio Genealogical Society is inviting the public to attend a workshop on identifying and caring for those old family photos.

The guest speaker will be Gilbert Gonzales, head of photographic resources at the Hayes Presidential Center at Spiegel Grove in Fremont.

Gonzales, a professional photographer, has done extensive work with the photographic collections of the Rutherford B. Hayes Center for 30 years. He will provide attendees with hands-on experience in identifying 19th- and 20th-century prints.

He will also cover various photographic processes used in early photography, as well as how print, negative and slide images were created. Strategies for photo preservation, digitizing and dating are also part of the session.

Participants are welcome to bring an old family photo for which they desire information such as the era in which it was taken, image process, etc.

This program will provide participants a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn about those old family photos, how to best preserve them and maybe figure out an approximate date for the picture.

The meeting will be 7 p.m. Thursday, April 12 at the Highland County Service Center, 1487 N. High Street (the old K-Mart building).

The program is open to anyone interested in dating, identifying and preserving old family photographs.
