Garden Club prepares for county fair

The Hillsboro Garden Club held its monthly meeting on July 25 at Floral Hall. A delicious “Pot Luck Picnic” was held prior to the meeting. Members and guests enjoyed a variety of tasty salads, casseroles, and desserts. This yearly event is a group favorite and no one goes home hungry.
The meeting was called to order by President Nancy Baldwin followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of God Bless America. Twenty-three members and two guests answered Roll Call by giving a gardening tip. Tips included a Mole Spray (1 gal water, 4 oz caster oil, 1⁄2 oz dish soap), placing crushed egg shells around plants slugs favor (they won’t cross the sharp shells), Acid Loving plants will appreciate Epsom Salts occasionally (2 Tbs salts dissolved in 1 gal water), and a light spray of Listerine to repel mosquitoes.
A donation was sent to the OAGC Foundation for Wahkeena Nature Preserve Fund in memory of deceased member Ann Rehark. Members were also reminded that dues will be collected at the August meeting as they are due in September.
Three long-time members who are no longer able to participate actively in the club were nominated to be named Honorary Members. The new Honorary Members are Juanita Carson now at Hearth & Care Nursing Home in Greenfield, Kathleen Griffith at Salyer Group Home in Hillsboro, and Dorothy P. Williamson at Crestwood Nursing Center in Hillsboro.
Carol Gorby displayed a 4-foot container filled with a canna featuring maroon streaked leaves as the “thriller”, lime green Sweet Potato vine as the “spiller”, and tiny blossomed Blue White Eyes as the “filler”. Larry Moore exhibited a “Devil’s Tongue“, a bulb he was intrigued with and has been watching grow into a large plant with unique leaves and spotted stem. No blossoms as yet - the mystery continues.
Beryl Gruelle stated Floral Hall is in immediate need of a new roof. The company selected plans to replace it and be ready for the fair if the weather cooperates.
Mary Smith, Ruth Anna Duff and Fran Larkin attended a Hydrangea Tea. The hostess was a guest speaker 2 years ago on the care and propagation of hydrangeas and also gives teas. She has over 80 plants on her grounds which runs down into a deep gorge. Although she is in ill health right now, the tea was lovely and members thoroughly enjoyed the visit. One variety especially recommended was “Harmony."
Rose Marie Cowdrey, Beryl Gruelle, Carol Gorby, Pat Lawrence, and Larry Moore attended the OAGC 2011 State Convention held at Shawnee State Park. Rose Marie received a 2nd and 4th place ribbons; Beryl received two 2nds and a 4th place ribbons in the Convention Flower Show following a Jimmy Buffett theme. Carol Gorby placed 2nd in the Faye Collins Designer of the Year Contest, Creative Design division, and Larry Moore picked up an award as Region 16 Outstanding Garden Club Member. Pat Lawrence received $100 and 1st Place Conservation & Beautification Award. There were two floral design programs, a presentation from The Arc of Appalachia, and a program on growing coleus. Our next convention will be June 25 - 27, 2012 at Hueston Woods State Park.
Highland County Fair Flower Show entries should be received by the Fair Board by August 20. Members were urged to enter many horticultural specimens and to try a new class in Floral Designs. Work schedule for the week of the fair will be available for sign up at the August meeting. Clean & Prep Day will be Sunday, September 4 with Tear Down & Clean Up on Saturday, September 10 at 9 am.
Pat Lawrence stated she had provided color scheme and plant suggestions after contact by the Rotary Club regarding landscaping and maintaining the new park located behind the Fire Department Building.
