Open Door free meal
Jan. 28 in Greenfield
The Open Door free meal will be held at the Greenfield Methodist church
on Jan. 28. Serving will be from 4-5:30 p.m. The menu will be potato soup,
sandwiches, crackers, cookies, and apples. Everyone is welcome.

The Soup’s On Free Meal at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 234 North High,
Hillsboro, will be held Jan. 28 from 5-6:30 p.m. The menu will include
chili, nachos/cheese, desserts and drinks. Praise and worship begins at 4:30

SATH hosts 3rd annual
chili cook-off Jan. 28
S.A.T.H. is having its third annual “Souper Bowl” Chili Cook-Off and
Cake Walk Saturday, Jan. 28 from 5-8 p.m. at the Hillsboro Elementary School
Cafeteria. All are welcome to come and taste the chili and judge the
winners. Bring your change and vote for your favorites, 25 cents per vote.
There will be chili tasting, face painting, games, cake walk, raffles and
food to buy. All proceeds go to support S.A.T.H. and KAMP DOVETAIL. Prizes
for chili winners: 1st place $100, 2nd place $50 and 3rd place $25. All
contestants should bring six quarts of chili to be judged, along with a $15

Absentee voting begins Jan. 31
The Highland County Board of Elections will begin absentee voting in the office on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Office hours from Jan. 31-March 2 are as follows: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and Tuesday, 8:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. On Friday, March 2, the office will be open from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m., which will end absentee voting in the office. You may also request a ballot by mail by calling (937) 393-9961.
TEA Party to host
candidates forum
Local voters will have a chance to hear from the candidates for Highland
County Commissioner at a forum sponsored by the Highland County TEA (Taxed
Enough Already) Party group.
The event will be held Monday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Hi-TEC building
in Hillsboro.
All six candidates who have filed petitions have been invited to attend
and speak to the public about questions regarding Highland County’s future,
ideas or plans for development, budgetary restraints and the local economy.
This forum is being made available to the public so that voters will be
better prepared to cast an informed vote in the Democratic and Republican
primary elections on March 6.
There are two commissioner seats to be filled this year. Incumbents
Shane Wilkin and Tom Horst are candidates again, along with Steve Cowdrey,
Brenda Losey, Randy Mustard and Josh Patton. The winners in their respective
primary elections will then face the voters again in the November general
election.
SOACDF offers
educational grant
The Southern Ohio Agricultural and Community Development Foundation will
once again offer the Educational Excellence Competitive Grant for school
year 2012-13. The Educational Excellence grant is a one-time award of up to
$7,500 toward the cost of tuition, on-campus housing, lab fees and books
that can be billed through the college or university. Applicants must be
enrolled full-time as a sophomore, junior or senior in the 2012-13 school
year at an accredited institution and be seeking a bachelor’s degree.
Students must also maintain 2.8 or higher GPA to be eligible. Applications
and guidelines for the Educational Excellence Competitive Grant are now
available at the SOACDF office or online at www.soacdf.net.
The application period ends Jan. 31, 2012. Applications will not be

Heartland needs judges
for Chili Challenge
Heartland of Hillsboro is recruiting judges for their eighth annual
Chili Challenge, set for Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 2 p.m.
There are two categories, mild and hot. A winner and second runner-up
will be picked in each category.
The first-place winning recipes will be prepared for all to sample at a
Chili Supper and Silent Auction to be held at the Ponderosa Banquet Center
March 8.
All proceeds will benefit the Highland County Society for Children and

Cowan Lake Association
plans Jan. 27 dinner
The Cowan Lake Association of Sportsmen (CLASS) will host a ham and
beans dinner Friday, Jan. 27 from 4-7 p.m. at their location on 331
Beechwood Road (off Route 350) in Wilmington. The menu will include ham and
beans, cornbread, side dishes, desserts and beverages. The cost is $6 for
adults, $5 for seniors and $2 for children. Carry-out available.
SATH’s annual Sweetheart Charity Ball Feb. 11
SATH will be holding its annual Valentine’s Sweetheart Charity Ball on
Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Roberts Centre in Wilmington. The evening will
begin with appetizers at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. and dancing from 8-11 p.m.
The attire for the evening is semi-formal/formal.
The cost is $100 per couple, which includes appetizers, dinner, dancing,
photos and door prizes. Child care will be available. Treat your sweetheart
to a special evening and help support SATH. SATH is a non-profit
organization that assists children with disabilities by sponsoring programs

The Highland County Democratic Party will host a “meet the candidates”
night on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 6:30 p.m. in the Highland County Administration
Building basement meeting room. Candidates appearing will include Randy
Mustard and Josh Patton, both running in a contested primary for county
commissioner. Brenda Losey, running unopposed in the primary for the other
county commissioner spot, will also be present, along with treasurer
candidate Gary Heaton, independent candidate Larry Burns for recorder and
91st State Representative candidate Peter Pence. The main speaker for the
evening will be David Krikorian, Democratic candidate for the 2nd
Congressional District. The public is invited.

Lynchburg-Clay Homecoming
The Lynchburg-Clay 2012 Homecoming will be held Friday, Feb. 3 at the
high school. The ceremonies will be held between the reserve and varsity
basketball games. This year’s opponent will be the Fairfield Lions, and the
reserve game begins at 6 p.m. All previous homecoming kings and queens are
encouraged to attend and be recognized. All Lynchburg, Buford and
Lynchburg-Clay alumni are invited to come and enjoy the activities. The
homecoming dance will be held Feb. 4 from 8-11 p.m. at the high school.
Admission is $5 per person. The student council is sponsoring the homecoming
events. The Athletic Boosters will be having their annual chili supper beginning at 4 p.m. They welcome everyone to come in and help support the Athletic Boosters.

On Feb. 4 at 7 p.m., the Clay Township Park Commission once again

Leadership Experience March 9-10
The 2012 Young Agricultural Professionals Leadership Experience will be
held March 9-10 at the Marriott Northwest in Dublin. Farm Bureau members
ages 18-35 who are an agricultural professional are invited to attend. The

Boaters safety course
March 31 at Lake Waynoka
The Waynoka WaterSports Club will be sponsoring an Ohio Boating
Education Course at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 31 at the Lake Waynoka Lodge.
Cost of this course is $5 payable to ODNR Watercraft. This course will
consist of 8 hours of instruction in a certified class followed by an exam.
This year everybody younger than 30 years of age needs to pass a test
certified by the state before they can drive any type of boat powered by
more than 10 hp. You can pre-register for the class by calling ODNR

HCAC spring 2012 soccer sign-ups
HCAC spring 2012 soccer sign-ups will be held Saturdays, Feb. 18, Feb.
25 and March 3 from noon to 2 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church gymnasium,
119 East Walnut St., Hillsboro The sign-up deadline will be April 2 (after
this date, your child will be put on a waiting list for a teams). They will
also be an equipment swap on these days as well. If you have any old cleats,
shin pads, or other soccer equipment you would like to get rid of, please

Hughes of the Counseling Center in Portsmouth Thursdays, Feb. 2-March 15

Lynchburg-Clay Homecoming
The Lynchburg-Clay 2012 Homecoming will be held Friday, Feb. 3 at the
high school. The ceremonies will be held between the reserve and varsity
basketball games. This year’s opponent will be the Fairfield Lions, and the
reserve game begins at 6 p.m. All previous homecoming kings and queens are
encouraged to attend and be recognized. All Lynchburg, Buford and
Lynchburg-Clay alumni are invited to come and enjoy the activities. The
homecoming dance will be held Feb. 4 from 8-11 p.m. at the high school.
Admission is $5 per person. The student council is sponsoring the homecoming
events. The Athletic Boosters will be having their annual chili supper beginning at 4 p.m. They welcome everyone to come in and help support the Athletic Boosters.

Ross County Community Action’s OPAE/Baseload Program
If you or someone you know is an AEP customer and is income eligible,
you may be able to have your refrigerator or freezer replaced free of
charge. Ross County Community Action is partnering with The American

The Highland County Chapter of PERI will meet Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. in the

Central Ohio Opry
performs in Buford
On Feb. 4 at 7 p.m., the Clay Township Park Commission once again
welcomes The Central Ohio Opry to the Buford School for another concert. If
you like good old-fashioned country music, plan to attend this concert.
Tickets are $8 per person, and there will be concessions served
beginning at 5:30 pm and continuing throughout the program. Featured artists
this month are Leigh Ann Cooper and Tim Villers.
Young Agricultural Professionals
Leadership Experience March 9-10
The 2012 Young Agricultural Professionals Leadership Experience will be
held March 9-10 at the Marriott Northwest in Dublin. Farm Bureau members
ages 18-35 who are an agricultural professional are invited to attend. The
cost is $130 per person if reservation is made by Feb. 3. After Feb. 3, the
cost is $150 per person. Scholarships are available. All reservations must

Boaters safety course
March 31 at Lake Waynoka
The Waynoka WaterSports Club will be sponsoring an Ohio Boating
Education Course at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 31 at the Lake Waynoka Lodge.
Cost of this course is $5 payable to ODNR Watercraft. This course will
consist of 8 hours of instruction in a certified class followed by an exam.
This year everybody younger than 30 years of age needs to pass a test
certified by the state before they can drive any type of boat powered by
more than 10 hp. You can pre-register for the class by calling ODNR
Watercraft at 513-734-2730. Be sure to reference the date and location for
above class. This class is open for any age and not just Lake Waynoka. For

Mammograms to be offered at Senior Center
The Jewish Hospital mobile mammography van will be at the Highland County
Senior Citizen Center on Feb. 13 from 1-2:30 p.m. For more information and

HCAC spring 2012 soccer sign-ups
HCAC spring 2012 soccer sign-ups will be held Saturdays, Feb. 18, Feb.
25 and March 3 from noon to 2 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church gymnasium,
119 East Walnut St., Hillsboro The sign-up deadline will be April 2 (after
this date, your child will be put on a waiting list for a teams). They will
also be an equipment swap on these days as well. If you have any old cleats,
shin pads, or other soccer equipment you would like to get rid of, please
bring them when you sign up. The cost will be $30 for ages 4-8,
Instructional and Passers (non-traveling) or $40 for ages 9 and up (Wings
and Kickers) If you do not have an application, they can be picked up one
from the box at the Liberty Park Concession stand. Please bring a completed

2002 Whiteoak Wildcats
Final Four Team Recognition
The Whiteoak Wildcats will recognize team players and coaches on the
2002 Final Four basketball team on on Friday, Feb. 17 during halftime of
the varsity game (a group photo of the team players and coaches will be
taken). Players and coaches are invited to attend and stay for a short
reception following the varsity game vs. Fayetteville. If you are a team
