New HCS students
encouraged to enroll
in early August
Richard Earley, superintendent of Hillsboro City Schools, would like to
encourage parents to complete the enrollment process for any new students
who will be attending HCS in the 2011-12 school year. If you have any
questions, contact Michelle Branscome at (937) 393-3132 or stop by Hillsboro
Elementary School, 500 U.S. 62, Hillsboro. Students start back to school
Monday, Aug. 15. (Please note: The elementary school office is closed during
July.)
Recovery program
meets on Tuesdays
The Celebrate Victory Recovery Program meets every Tuesday night at 7
p.m. at ReaLife Church, located at 7454 Fenner Lane in Hillsboro.
Alzheimer’s Support
Group meetings
The Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati will sponsor a
Highland County Alzheimer’s/Dementia Family Caregiver Support Group on the
third Monday of each month from 5-6:30 p.m. at Highland District Hospital.

Funds sought for
Veterans Memorial
The Highland County Commissioners and the VFW are placing a Veterans
Memorial on the Highland County Courthouse lawn. The cost of the memorial is
$50,000. In order to raise the money, they will put any veteran’s name on a
brick for $50. All Highland County veterans are eligible. The committee will
also accept donations. Any veteran who wants to buy a brick may contact the
VFW at 393-0211 or call 393-9638.
Sunnyside Church of Christ
The Sunnyside Church of Christ invites the public to visit its worship
service. The Bible study and worship service are at the Grange Building of
the Highland County Fairgrounds. The Bible study begins at 9:30 a.m.
Sundays. The worship service begins at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays.
New Harmony Lodge
sponsors charity ride
New Harmony Lodge #435 F&AM and Mt. Orab Chapter #514 OES will sponsor
the Harmony Star Charity Ride, with donation to Cincinnati Shriners Burns
Hospital, on Aug. 27 (Sept. 10 rain date). Registration will take place from
9-11 a.m., with lunch served at 1 p.m. The event will start and end at the
Mt. Orab Park with a picnic after the event. Registration is $15 for single
riders or $20 for double riders, with an additional $7 per person for lunch
(free for children under 5). The community is welcome to attend. For more

A Highland County quilt show will be held Saturday, Aug. 6 from 10 a.m.
- 5 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 7 from noon - 4 p.m. at the Highland County Senior
Center, 185 Muntz St., Hillsboro. Admission is $3. The
event will be handicap accessible. There will be a display of
beautiful quilts, a raffle quilt, door prizes, vendors and a people’s choice
award. If interested in entering a quilt or for any

DARE Fest Aug. 5-6
Highland County DARE Fest 2011 will be held Aug. 5-6 at the AmVets Park
at Rocky Fork Lake. Friday night will feature a fish fry and music at by
Street Wise at 7 p.m. and by Blue Steel at 9 p.m. There will also be a K-9
demo and emergency vehicle display. Saturday will include an ATV pull
(contact Dep. Turner at 393-1421 for details), hot-air balloon rides in the
evening, inflatable rides and games for the kids all day, and music by Bar
Codes at 9 p.m. Families can camp for the entire weekend for
$20. Food will be available for purchase, including breakfast on Saturday.

for more details or to reserve a camping spot.

The following are free workshops open to the community offered by the
Highland County Employment Center in the month of July. Attendees are asked
to register for these events by calling (937) 393-1933 ext. 138.
• Job Search Workshop, Friday, July 15; two sessions, 10 a.m.-noon and
2-4 p.m. This informative workshop will teach job seekers how to effectively
market themselves and their abilities to prospective employers.
• Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel Workshops, Friday, July 22; two
sessions, 10 a.m.-noon (Microsoft Word) and 2-4 p.m. (Microsoft Excel).
The goal of each training class is to provide an overview of Microsoft
Excel and Word and how to perform basic, everyday functions.
• Interviewing Workshop, Friday, July 29; two sessions, 10 a.m.-noon and
2-4 p.m. Types of interviews, what to prepare before an interview and
following-up after an interview will be covered.

Thanks to the State Library of Ohio, two databases have been added to
the Ohio Web Library resources page.
Just visit the Highland County District Library at www.highlandco.org
and click on “Reference Databases” in the left-hand column.
These will be one-year pilot projects and usage will be monitored, so
use these databases now.

Marshall United Methodist Church VBS
The Marshall United Methodist Church invites children of all ages to the
SonSurf Beach Bash Vacation Bible School, July 18-22 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Children will have a great time singing songs, hearing Bible stories,
watching skits, creating crafts, playing games and eating tasty snacks. Most
importantly, when they meet up with Jesus, they’ll discover just how much

Benefit supper July 23
A benefit supper will be held Saturday, July 23 at the Sardinia Elementary
School from 4-8 p.m. in honor of Debbie (Wallace) Sullivan, the daughter of
Joe and Judy Wallace. She has been diagnosed with cancer and is currently
undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. A ham supper will be served with
other sandwiches available. A baked goods auction will begin at 6 p.m.,
followed by music from local talent. Music will also be provided by DJ Tim
Hubbard, Jukebox Junkies throughout the evening. For more information to
make a donation or to donate baked goods for the auction, call Deanne Mock
at (937) 442-5675.
HCCAO-WIC hosts
breastfeeding awareness walk
HCCAO-WIC will host a walk for breastfeeding awareness Aug. 11 from
9-11 a.m. at the Southern State Community College central campus
walking track. (In the event of inclement weather, the walk will be
held at the YMCA indoor track.) The event will be held in memory of
Jeanne Polstra, RN, CLC, a dedicated breastfeeding advocate. There
will be raffle tickets sold for a new glider rocking chair. All
