CHILLICOTHE – Kim Buchanan, a GI/Pulmonary nurse who has worked at Adena Health System for 22 years, recently was presented the Award of Excellence, one of the highest awards available to Adena employees.
The award recognizes the longtime nurse for innovation, integrity and team work, as well as communications skills.
“She goes out of her way to make patients feel comfortable and to help alleviate anxiety among patients and their families. Kim never just does what is expected of her in her job, she is always the one who goes the extra mile,” according to
Amanda Salyers and others who nominated her for the honor.
“Recently a patient was confused post-operatively and needed further education. Kim dropped what she was doing to explain the diagnosis to the patient and to explain to the family how to follow up and keep informed on the care the patient would be receiving.
“She could have sent the patient and family back to the floor and let nurses there take care of it, but that is not Kim’s way,” another said of Buchanan.
“As Charge Nurse, she keeps her staff and her supervisor updated on any changes throughout the day. She also keeps patients and families updated when there is a delay in their care. Kim’s attitude and positive communication keeps our department upbeat and motivated,” a colleague said.
Others who nominated Buchanan, who lives in Ross County, talked about her eagerness to share her skills and talents, and her willingness to help other departments when needs arose. “She jumps in and helps co-workers without being asked when she can see they need help.”
Colleagues also praised her for her willingness to adapt to new technology.
“She has embraced the role of directing our unit to overcome any obstacles when necessary changes are implemented. She researches other hospital’s GI/ Pulmonary departments to find best practice for our specialty.”
“Kim gives her best to this health system every time she walks through the door. She has been a loyal employee for 22 years and I am proud to have her as an employee in the GI/Pulmonary Lab,” said Carolyn Wallin, RN, Manager of GI Pulmonary/ASC Endoscopy.
