Annual potluck picnic, meeting in July held for Hillsboro Garden Club

President Jennifer West opened the July Hillsboro Garden Club meeting with a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.
 
Lynn Luman, secretary, took roll call with 12 members and six guests answering the question: “What is your most bothersome weed?”
 
The tip of the month: The term “annual” means disappointment once a year.
 
After a brief adjournment to host the annual potluck picnic, treasurer Ruth Anna Duff provided the monthly financial report.
 
For the horticulture portion of the meeting, Andrea Schneider displayed her beautiful “pineapple plant” with its lone flower that actually resembles a miniature pineapple. In addition, Helen Roe presented her Aloe Vera plant, expounding on the many medicinal and healing benefits of Aloe.
 
In a special horticulture presentation, a junior gardener, Avacyn Frances, Sue Hurley’s granddaughter, showcased her recently planted “Chicks & Hens,” sharing with the group her placement for optimal lighting conditions and proper watering techniques. Excellent presentation, Avacyn!
 
West, along with Mary Smith, offered several addresses to the garden club for consideration in the 2025 Hillsboro Garden Club Landscaping Awards. Larry Moore made a motion to accept the addresses, seconded by Judith Stivender, and the motion was carried by all members.
 
Stivender then presented a prototype of a handmade cornucopia to be considered as centerpieces for the Region 16 Fall Meeting hosted by the Hillsboro Garden Club on Wed., Oct. 8 at Backroom Paradise. Stivender requested the group to consider the centerpiece, and if approved, the membership could possibly convene on an upcoming Saturday to assemble the centerpieces. 

Further, Stivender offered a recommendation to give bulbs to each attendee for a table gift. It was decided to special order Daffodil bulbs along with a smaller bulb to give, an example being Grape Hyacinth.
 
West and Luman both requested assistance from the membership to cover the floral hall during the upcoming Highland County Fair. Fair duty consists of welcoming patrons that enter the floral hall to view the flower specimens and artistic designs and answer any questions about the exhibits and the Hillsboro Garden Club. West further requested assistance during the meeting next month for building clean-up and fair preparation.
 
The next meeting will be held on Tues., Aug. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the floral hall located at the Highland County Fairgrounds. Mary Smith and Luman will serve as hostesses for the meeting.
