Altrusa of Highland County enjoys April meeting

By Connie Williams
Altrusa of Highland County

Altrusa of Highland County had a wonderful April meeting which was hosted by the Finance Committee.

The meeting began with a delicious meal and tables decorated with beautiful spring flower arrangements. Their theme changed a bit with all the warm weather we have had, so it became “April flowers, hopefully bring May showers.”

Roll call had each member name their favorite flower. Many members named roses, but in a variety of colors. Traditional business items were conducted but also lots of discussion and appreciation for Jeff Boester and his crew for making the new Little Free Library which is a replica of the Highland County Courthouse.

A check was received from The Alley Neighborhood Grille from the Dine and Donate fundraiser event. Sergeant-at- Arms Linda Penn, had some entertaining giveaways for the annual club raffle.

The meeting ended with the most delightful and thoughtful message from our newest club member, Jenn Harvey.  She began with the humor of April – not just showers and flowers, but mud, bad hair days, and need for a coat or sunscreen.

Flowers are quite interesting, sunflowers literally follow the sun all day long, while some of us have a hard time following a routine; tulips were once used as money, and the corpse flower smells like rotting meat. They are a good reminder to all of us that they are patient, they bloom when they are ready. A good reminder to all of us, not everyone and everything are on a timeline. But before we get the flowers, we need some showers, so the next time you’re stuck in an April rainstorm, just remember, the flowers are coming. And if nothing else…at least you don’t have to water your plants that day.

Several club members will be attending the District Five Conference. Members are busy keeping the Little Free Libraries filled for our community’s reading enjoyment and preparing for the next Book Sale on May 2 from 9 a.m.-noon in the Rent-2-Own shopping center.
