A newly formed Adena Mansion and Gardens Society is to assume management of the state memorial in Chillicothe Jan. 4. The agreement for the group, formed of area residents, to manage the site for the Ohio Historical Society was approved this week.
The local group already is exploring ways to increase attendance and use of the facilities through rentals and special events. Weddings, receptions, church group outings, company picnics, business meetings and other functions could double the normal attendance at the site which was about 10,000 two years ago.
The group is conducting a search for an executive director to manage the site and is accepting resumes locally. Resumes may be sent to or dropped off at the Adena Mansion and Gardens Society, c/o Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce, 45 E. Main Street, Chillicothe, OH 45601. Deadline for resumes is 4 p.m., November 23, 2009
The Ohio Historical Society started turning to local groups to manage its 58 sites as funds from the state budget began to dwindle, forcing cuts in hours and employees at the sites, including Adena.
OHS remains the owner of the site that was part of the estate of Thomas Worthington, Ohio’s first U.S. senator and the state’s sixth governor. Tours started in 1947 and the first major renovation was completed in 1953. In 2003, in time for the state’s bicentennial, the second major renovation was completed, including the Museum and Education <http://www.friendsofadena.org/> Center.[[In-content Ad]]
