Access and Success for Adults’ (ASA) “Your Place” Program has received funding from General Electric’s Community Service Fund at the Peebles Test-Site and United Way of Greater Cincinnati, Eastern Area, to offer the “Your Place” for the Adult Learner class at the Adams Brown Community Action Building in Georgetown. Seven classes have been offered at the current site. This program provides essential services to area residents by offering a free class that assists individuals in transition in achieving their goals of attaining education and/or employment for the betterment of their families and society as a whole.
Success rate of participants since Sue Evans was hired into the program in 1989 have resulted in 80 percent or higher of students going on to higher education and/or obtaining employment. Mrs. Evans, Executive Director and Facilitator states, “This is a great place for students to begin; we have a Resource Lab for student support; the staff are mentors to help participants in achieving their goals.”
Chris Lawson of Ripley, a recent graduate, stated, “When I saw your article in the newspaper, it was like you threw me a lifeline, and I grabbed it with both hands. I knew nothing about a computer and desperately wanted to learn to e mail and to become knowledgeable of Facebook.”
Chris increased her typing skills and achieved her goals during class time lab hours. Chris now has a computer at home to continue her networking skills and is encouraging others to enroll in the class.
The next class will be offered at 406 West Plum Street (across from the HEAP Office) in Georgetown beginning March 26 and ending May 2, 2012. The six-week class will operate on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with an hour lunch break. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion that can be used on updated resumes.
