The 2011 Writer of Promise award at Shawnee State University will be presented to Matthew McGuire, of Chillicothe, at the Second Annual SSU Intro Series Reading. The event will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9 in SSU’s Clark Memorial Library Alcove.
Neil Carpathios, assistant professor of English and Humanities, will be introducing McGuire who will read from his stories and poems.
“I feel honored and I’m very touched to have been selected,” McGuire said. “But, more than anything, I feel challenged. Now the pressure is on for me to deliver the goods. It’s a great motivation.”
McGuire was writing a little when he was in high school but it wasn’t until Professor Carpathios started teaching him that he became passionate about his writing.
“It’s become my passion,” McGuire said. “Professor Carpathios brought that out in me. He has been a wonderful resource and suggested several literary journals where I should submit my work.”
McGuire plans to continue submitting stories to magazines and journals and then build a strong collection that he could publish in a book one day.
“But, I am still in the early phases of that as well,” McGuire said.
The event is free and open to the public.
