Zelma Mae Furnish, 85, of Hillsboro, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012 at her home.

She was born Feb. 18, 1927 in Carter County, Ky., the daughter of the late James and Carrie Fultz Thompson.

Mrs. Furnish had served Highland County for over 42 years, first working for Herschel Creed in the Highland County Treasurer's Office for eight years and later serving as Deputy Director and Director of the Highland County Board of Elections. She had served for many years as the State Democratic Central Committeewoman, was twice a delegate to the National Democratic Convention, a member of the Highland County Democratic Central Committee, a member of the Hillsboro First Baptist Church and an award winning bridge player.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, William B. Furnish; two sons, Gary (Bonnie) Furnish of Sandy Hook, Ky. and Brent (Mary) Furnish of Hillsboro; four grandchildren, Christopher (Jackie) Furnish of Goshen, Carrie (Grant) Hutchinson of Sandy Hook, Ky., Brian (Carrie) Furnish of Liberty Township, Ohio and Richard Furnish of Columbus; four great-grandchildren, Sierra Hutchinson and Adam, Blake and Becca Furnish; one brother, Jack (Mary Jo) Thompson of Morehead, Ky.; one sister, Shirley (Ben Cothern) Spencer of Shalimar, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Judy Thompson of Morehead, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by one sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Ray Walters and one brother, Jesse L. Thompson.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28 at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Dr. Gary Furnish will officiate. Graveside services will follow at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at the Bowen Chapel Cemetery near Olive Hill, Ky. Friends may call on Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro.
