     William L. Cornelius, 89, of Hillsboro, died Friday, May 14, 2010 at the Heartland of Hillsboro.
     He was born in Adams County on March 20, 1921, the son of the late M. H. and Lelia (Lyon) Cornelius. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, E. Pauline (Bryant) Cornelius on May 10, 1997; one son, Daryl Cornelius, one brother Ralph Waldo Cornelius two sisters Onda Glaze & Lois Dragoo.
     He was a graduate of Belfast High School in the class of 1938; a graduate of Ohio State University in the class of 1942 with a B.S. in Agriculture; and a graduate of Notre Dame University, Officer's Candidate School. He served in the US Navy from 1942 to 1946 and was a member of the retired US Navy Officers Association; field man for National Dairy, 1946-1947; manager of Producers Livestock Association, 1947-1972; rural mail carrier, 1972-1986; past master & superintendent, Pomona Grange of Highland County for 50 years; and  director and board member of the Highland County Board of Elections, 1975-1989. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, 60-year member of Highland Lodge F&AM #38, 60-year member of the Highland County Grange, lifetime member of Ohio State Alumni Association, and a member of the Highland County Senior Citizens, Highland County Farm Bureau, State & National LST Association. He served on the Hillsboro Hospital Board and Hillsboro City Board of Education and was a trustee of the Hillsboro First United Methodist Church, Director Emeritus of the Farmers & Traders Bank, and chairman of Highland County Memorial Committee. He was inducted into the Highland County Agriculture Hall of Fame and the Ohio Century Farmers.
     He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, William Dean & Joyce Cornelius of Gahanna and David L. Cornelius of Canal Fulton;  five grandchildren, Patrick (Gretchen) Cornelius of New Albany, Kelly (Michael) Carr of Gahanna, Elaine (Scott) Wiese, of Columbus, Gordon Cornelius of Powell, Burke Cornelius of Columbus, six great grandchildren, Lydia Cornelius, Regan Cornelius, Paige Cornelius, Brady Carr, Clay Carr, Cameron Carr, brother-in-law & sister-in-law, Donald & Donna Moore of Xenia, Sister-in-law, Edith Bryant of Dayton, numerous nieces and nephews.
     Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Thompson Funeral Home with Dr. Chuck Shonkwiler officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Highland County Honor Guard.
     Friends may call on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Thompson Funeral Home.
     Memorials may be made to the Highland County Society for Children & Adults, 111 W. Walnut Street, Hillsboro, Ohio 45133.
