William “Bill” L. West
William “Bill” L. West, 88, of Hillsboro, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on Oct. 15, 1936 in May Hill, the son of the late Marion Hammond and Nellie Irene (Morrison) Hammond.
Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, whose love for his family was the foundation of his life. A member of the Hillsboro Church of Christ, he lived with quiet faith, a generous spirit and a ready sense of humor that endeared him to all who knew him.
For 45 years, Bill worked as a master carpenter, lending his craftsmanship to projects all across Ohio. After retiring, he continued to share his talents wherever they were needed – always willing to lend a helping hand. He was a proud member of the Carpenters Union and a past member of the Hillsboro Elks Lodge 361.
Bill enjoyed life’s simple pleasures – golfing trips with friends to Kentucky, bowling nights, tending to his garden, and traveling to the Smoky Mountains with his beloved wife, Gloria. He also loved boating and had a playful way of teaching his children to swim – by tossing them overboard with a smile.
Known throughout his neighborhood as “Mayor Bill,” he was always ready with a smile, a wave, or a friendly word. He loved giving his grandchildren tractor rides through the neighborhood, creating memories filled with laughter and joy. Bill had a nickname for everyone he knew, and his humor, warmth, and storytelling made him the heart of every gathering.
Bill is survived by his wife of 45 years, Gloria West whom he married on Jan. 15, 1980; six children, Jeffery (Peggy) West of Mowrystown, Jill (Scott) Hakes of Williamsburg, David (Terri) West of Phoenix, Ariz., Karla (Mike) Hicks of Mt.
