Thelma Faye Freeman, 89, of Hillsboro, passed away Monday afternoon, Aug. 6, 2012 at the Laurels of Hillsboro.
She was born Aug. 17, 1922, in Kitts Hill, Ohio, the daughter of the late James Albert and Effie Mae (Bunn) Payne.
She was united in marriage to Rev. Harold L. Freeman on May 22, 1941 and spent 63 years with her loving husband. She worked with her husband in the church work and was a member of Harris Creek Church of the Brethren. After moving to Hillsboro, she worshipped with the Northview Baptist Church congregation. Thelma attended public school in Lawrence County, Ohio. She worked at the Brethren Retirement Home in Greenville for 17 years as a certified dietary manager. After retiring, she and her family moved to Hillsboro to be close to her extended family.
She is survived by a grandson and a granddaughter whom she raised after their parents were killed, Travis (Darla) Freeman and Dawn Freeman Wright; three great-grandchildren, Jacob Freeman, Trenton Wright and Austin Wright and a step-great-granddaughter, Reagan Fledderjohn; a niece, Joyce Bennington; a sister-in-law, Ruth Jackman; and many extended family members and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved son, Russell, and his wife Estella, who died in a train accident; and brothers James William Payne, Franklyn E. Payne, Thomas E. Payne and James A. Payne II; sisters Inez Payne Kingery and Anna Mae Payne Streber.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10, 2012 at the Northview Baptist Church in Hillsboro. Pastor Kenny Cousar will officiate. Burial at Union City Brethren Cemetery, Union City, Ind., will follow with graveside committal services officiated by Rev. Tom Clevenger.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9 at the Northview Baptist Church.
