Ruth Elizabeth (Ross) Cowgill, 82, of the New Petersburg community, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013 at home on the family farm.
She was born Sept. 17, 1930, in Hillsboro, the daughter of the late William E. and Mary (Teboe) Ross.
She was married to Joseph W. Cowgill on June 26, 1955, in Friendsville, Tenn., and he preceded her in death on June 4, 2012.
She was a 1948 graduate of Greenfield McClain High School and also was a graduate of Rio Grande College. She then taught kindergarten for the Greenfield School system. Upon her marriage to Joe, she became a stay-at-home mother and homemaker, helping on the farm when needed. She was a lifelong member of the Fall Creek Friends Church. She was very active with the Wilmington Yearly Meeting, the United Society of Friends Women and Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). She was an honorary member of the New Petersburg Social Civic Club and was a former member of the Highland County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. She was instrumental in the campaign and development of the Hills and Dales Training Center facility. She was also a former Central Committee member of the Republican Party.
She is survived by four children, Joseph R. (Cheryl) Cowgill of Hillsboro, Retta (John) Short of Lynchburg, Roberta (Mitchel) Karnes of Hillsboro and Ramona Cowgill, also of Hillsboro; a son-in-law, Peter Joseph Kelly II of Hillsboro; nine grandchildren, Brittany (Erik) Ackels of Columbus, Brandon Cowgill of Hillsboro, Ashley Cowgill of Columbus, Nicole (B.J.) Oberrecht of Lynchburg, Sean (Misty) Short of Lynchburg, Katie (Casey) Basford of Hillsboro, P.J. Kelly of Hillsboro and Garrett Karnes and Derek Karnes, both of Hillsboro; five great-grandchildren, Ella Ackels and Brady Ackels of Columbus, Brayden Oberrecht and Colton Short of Lynchburg and Emerie Basford of Hillsboro; two sisters, Helen (Richard) Behm of Hillsboro and Anna Masterson of Cincinnati; a sister-in-law, Geneva Ross of West Union,; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Ronda Kelly, and a brother, Harold Ross.
Funeral services will be noon on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013 at the Fall Creek Friends Church. H. Scott Latimer will officiate. Burial will follow in the Stringtown Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at noon on Saturday.
The Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro is serving the family.
