Marion "Red" Wylie, 89, passed away Friday, May 13, 2011 at Edgewood Manor in Greenfield.
Red was born Oct. 4, 1921 in Adams County, as he was fond of saying, "down on my uncle's place." He was the youngest of eight children born to Joseph and Pearl Grooms Wylie. He attended several schools and graduated from Sinking Spring High School in 1939. Red was on the high school basketball team and became a lifelong fan of the sport. He was selected by McClain Tiger Boosters as the Tiger Booster of the Year in 2006.
On Sept. 23, 1939, he married Clara Alice Stanley, and they had four children. He was predeceased by his parents; sisters Grace, Olivia and Ruby; and brothers Alva, Francis, Loyd and Orin.
Shortly after World War II, Red saw a need for homes for returning veterans and built his first house on McClain Avenue. In the following years, he built many houses in Greenfield, Hillsboro, Washington C.H. and surrounding areas. After retiring from building, he bought a portable sawmill and made wood trim. Red possessed a sharp wit and was unusually skillful at playing cards and checkers.
Red is survived by four children, Beverly (Bill) Bennett of Lander, Wyo., Gary (Raydene) Wylie of Greenfield, Steven (Sue) Wylie of Clarkston, Mich. and Sharon (Joe) Wisecup of Frankfort; 10 grandchildren, Cynthia Stanley, Becky McDonald, Michael Bennett, Alison Stratton, Raelynn Wylie, Caitlin Wylie and Stuart Wylie, and Claire, Jeb and Olivia Wisecup, along with six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, May 19 at 11:30 a.m. at the Anderson-Strueve Funeral Home in Greenfield with Rev. Joseph Current officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday evening, May 18, from 5-8 p.m.
Red has donated his body to Ohio University's College of Osteopathic Medicine for medical education.
