Judy Ann Newby
Judy Ann Newby
Judy Ann Newby, 83, of Hillsboro, passed away peacefully Sunday Dec. 28, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Jan. 7, 1942 in Pine Island, Minn., the daughter of the late John and Margaret (Lyons) Durst.
Shortly after her birth, Judy and her family made their home in Rainsboro, where she grew up, met her beloved husband, Bob, and enjoyed 67 years of marriage together.
She attended McClain High School in Greenfield, graduated from Wilmington College with a degree in education, and she was a member of the Hillsboro First Presbyterian Church. She shared her love of knowledge with many students in her 26 years of teaching for the Hillsboro City Schools. Her education and creativity was treasured by her students as she was involved with many extracurricular activities and resulted in many teaching awards.
Outside of teaching, Judy was a talented artist and loved to paint and she won Best of Show at the Highland County Fair. Judy was an avid golfer and bridge player. She was involved for many years with the Hillsboro Elks Ladies Golf Association and played bridge for decades with the same group of friends. She was also involved with numerous charity events as a member of the Mardi Club.
Retirement called when she chose to share her love of life and adventure with her grandchildren which were her pride and joy. Retirement was a time for Bob and Judy to reap the rewards of the beautiful family they had built. They enjoyed countless family vacations and celebrations, mostly in which Judy planned every detail. For the past 25 years, Bob and Judy enjoyed spending their winters in Fripp Island, S.C., where Judy was involved with golf, bridge and making memories with family at the beach. As the great-grandchildren arrived, she once again had more little ones to cherish and spend time with. Nothing brightened her days more than these little loves of her life.
Judy touched many lives in her time here on earth that will provide us all with memories to treasure.
Judy’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the nursing staff at Adena Fayette Medical Center for their compassionate end-of-life care, as well as to all of the staff at Carriage Court of Washington Court House.
Judy is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Robert “Bob” Newby; three children, Steve (Amy) Newby, Debbie (Jerry) Williams, and Kelly (Robert) Bicknell; five grandchildren, Michael (Bethany) Williams, Jennifer (Zachary) Stout, John (Lindsey) Malin, Emily (Geoffrey) Forgie, and Matthew Newby; six great-grandchildren, Colton, Hunter, McKenzie, Aubrey, Cooper and Grady; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Wilma “Billie” and Paul Rhoads; and a great-grandson, Brooks McKay Malin.
Visitation will be 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3 at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. following visitation at the funeral home. Burial will be held in the Hillsboro Cemetery at a later date at the convenience of the family.
