John Newton “Jack” Chaney, 95, of Green Valley, Ariz. and formerly of Hillsboro, died Thursday, October 17, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson, Ariz.

He was born June 27, 1918 in Hillsboro, the son of the late Newton E. and Elsie Hall Chaney.

Mr. Chaney owned and operated Chaney Insurance Agency, now known as Gibbs and Associates, in Hillsboro for 47 years.

He served as a navigator in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II, commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was a cradle member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, a graduate of Hillsboro High School, a member of Highland Lodge #38 F&AM and the York Rite Bodies for over 60 years and was a life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #361.

On August 31, 1940 in Hillsboro, he married Martha Schweinsberger, who preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 2005.

He was also preceded in death by his brother, David H. Chaney and his sister, Gladys E. Wessels.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. The Rev. Judy Wiley will officiate. Burial, with military honors presented by the Highland County Honor Guard, will follow in the Hillsboro Cemetery.

A reception for family and friends will be held in Lacy Hall, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, immediately following services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. The Turner & Son Funeral Home is serving the family.
