James R. Dean

James R. Dean, 82, of Hillsboro, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013 at his home. 

He was born Dec. 1, 1930 in St. Martin, the son of the late Charles and Gladys Woodruff Dean. 

He was a 1948 graduate of Lynchburg-Clay High School and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. 

He was a dairy farmer and auto mechanic in the Danville area for many years.  He also taught agricultural mechanics at Laurel Oaks and Adams County Joint Vocational Schools in the 1970s. 

He served as a trustee for Hamer Township, served on the board of governors at Highland District Hospital, was a member of the Hillsboro Lions Club, was a parishioner as well as a Parish Council member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hillsboro, a former member of Zane Trace Antique Car Club and Old Friends Car Club. 

For the past several years he has been a winter resident of Tropical Park in Zephyrhills, Fla.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta Carlier Dean, to whom he was married on July 18, 1953 at St. Patrick’s Church in Fayetteville; six children, Charlene Dean of Cincinnati, Janet (Doug) Carson of Louisville, Ky., Jane (Mark) Collier of Hillsboro, Marge (Rick) Mason of Columbus, Ind., Mary (George) Hamilton of Auburn Hills, Mich. and Joe (Sue) Dean of Galena; 12 grandchildren, Nathan (Allyce) Horne, Tom Horne, Brett Horne, Kevin Mason, Tara (Jonathan) Boriss, Amy Mason, Zachary Hamilton, Christina Hamilton, Josh Carson, Jennifer Carson, Ryan Dean and Matt Dean; one great-grandchild, Joel Boriss; one sister, Frances (Jack) Detmer of Cincinnati; and several nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Ralph Dean; and two sisters, Hilda Wilkin and Iva Quallen. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 11 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hillsboro. Father Daniel Fitzpatrick and Father Mike Paraniuk will concelebrate. 

Burial with military honors presented by the Highland County Honor Guard will follow in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Fayetteville. 

Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. on Sunday, March 10 at Father Luehrmann’s Parish Center of St. Mary Catholic Church, 212 South High Street, Hillsboro.
