Jacob Alvis Akers, 96, of Lynchburg, died Monday morning, July 19, 2010 at his home.
He was born March 25, 1914 in Liggin, Ky., the son of the late Henry C. and Amanda Tackett Akers.
Mr. Akers had been engaged in coal mining and later worked in construction. He was a member of the Little Bethel Old Regular Baptist Church in Sligo, Ohio.
He is survived by six sons, Joseph C. Akers of St. Petersburg, Fla., Gary L. Akers of Belfast, Jerry D. Akers of Lebanon, Ky., David W. Aker of Gaines, Penn., Jacob D. Akers of Lynchburg, and Keith A. Akers of Clearwater, Fla.; five daughters, Daneen Stergis of Milford, Lillian G. Elking of Hillsboro, Sheila Newkirk of Hillsboro, Patricia A. Tong of Lynchburg, and Karen L. Brown of Lynchburg; 43 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Holbrook Akers, on Aug. 11, 1998; two daughters, Anita Blaylock and Sharon Akers; one grandson, Benjamin Leatherman; one great-granddaughter, Cinnamon Elking; one great-grandson, Devin Dabe; one brother, Joe E. Akers; and one sister, Gladys Dobbs.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 23 at the Little Bethel Old Regular Baptist Church in Sligo, Ohio. Burial will follow in the Lynchburg Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro and from 8 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the Little Bethel Old Regular baptist Church in Sligo.
