Gilbert Wayne 'Pete' Murphy
Gilbert Wayne “Pete” Murphy, 82, passed away on Feb. 18, 2026 in Weirsdale, Florida.
Born July 17, 1943, in Hillsboro, Ohio, he lived a life marked by dedication to family, service to his country, and a passion for athletics and community.
Wayne was the son of Paul and Kathleen Murphy. He grew up in Hillsboro alongside his siblings – Gifford Murphy, Pat Evans, Donna Reno, Ramona Patrick and Ken Murphy. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1961, where he distinguished himself as an exceptional athlete. Wayne excelled in baseball, track, basketball, and football during his high school years. His athletic prowess earned him All Ohio honorable mention in football in 1960 – a notable achievement at a time when only two classes existed in Ohio high school football (A and AA), with just 270 players statewide receiving first team or honorable mention honors that year. To put this in perspective, Roger Staubach was honorable mention All Ohio in the previous year.
After high school, Wayne answered the call to serve his country by joining the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in London, England – a chapter of his life that reflected both his sense of duty and adventurous spirit. Upon returning home to Ohio Wayne embarked on a career with the Highland County Engineer's Office as an inspector. His work ethic and commitment to public service were evident throughout his tenure there.
Wayne's love for sports continued beyond his high school years; he remained an avid football fan throughout his life. He also enjoyed reading and a good game of euchre.
Family was always at the heart of Wayne's life. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Ann; their son, Mark; his brother, Ken Murphy; grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Kathleen Murphy; his son, Matt; brother, Gifford Murphy; and sisters, Pat Evans, Donna Reno, and Ramona Patrick.
Wayne's legacy is one of kindness, athletic achievement, dedicated service to both country and community and deep devotion for those he loved.
Per Wayne's request he will be cremated and there will be no services.
