Gerald W. Whiting, 77, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010 at his residence.
He was born May 23, 1933, in Caesarcreek Township in Greene County, a son of the late Estel Harry and Mary Frances (Rosselott) Whiting.
He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean War, and was a retired farmer and small businessman.
He attended the Lynchburg First Church of Christ.
On Nov. 1, 1952, in Liberty, Ind., he married his wife of 57 years, Louella (Shoemaker) Whiting, who survives. He is also survived by three sons, Kevin Whiting and his wife, Patty, of Wilmington; Mark Whiting and his wife, Rose, of Lynchburg; Barry Whiting and his wife, Nancy of Keller, Texas; a grandson he raised as a son, Shawn Stubbs and his wife, Lisa, of Sardinia; eight additional grandchildren, Jenny (Jason) Emmert of Thornville; Kasey Lee Whiting of Jamestown; Todd Whiting of Leesburg; Matt Whiting of Lynchburg; Terri Rice of New Vienna; Rhonda (Gregg) Smith of Cincinnati; Billie Jo (Tim) Elliott of Loveland; and James Stanforth of Wilmington; 12 great-grandchildren, Dakota Stubbs, Christian Stubbs, Shane Stubbs, Sarah Rice, Olivia Rice, Katie Simpson, Anastasia Simpson, Gabriel Emmert, Nicholas Emmert, Brenda Elliott, Skyler Stanforth, and Levi Whiting; four great-great grandchildren; a brother, Larry (Donna) Whiting of Wilmington; as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Lynn Stubbs, who passed away Sept. 23, 1984; a brother, Charles Whiting; and a sister, Margene Whiting.
In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Whiting was cremated. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16 at the Lynchburg First Church of Christ. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until the time of the service at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the church.
