George R. Powell, 78, of Hillsboro, died Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at Heartland of Hillsboro.
George was born May 25, 1933 in Oregonia, Ohio, the son of the late Erby and Mary (Steffy) Powell.
George retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service, serving during the Korean Conflict and two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was a member of the VFW Post #9094, Hillsboro and a member of the Hillsboro Freewill Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Agnes (Hollaris) Powell; two daughters and son-in-law, Mary and Mark Tassell of Loveland and Diane Elam of Oregonia; one son, Erby Powell of Cincinnati; two stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Charlotte and Mark Willett of West Union and Cynthia and Gary Purdin of Hillsboro; one stepson, Steven Nash of Cookeville, Tenn.; five brothers, Herbert Powell of Otway, Edwin Powell of Monterey, Tenn., Elijah Powell of Knoxville, Tenn. and Johnny Powell and Tim Powell, both of Lebanon; one sister, Marjorie Reed of Hillsboro; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Adeline Powell, and three brothers, James, Tommy and Carroll Powell.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 15, 2011 at the Hillsboro Freewill Baptist Church, 6360 U.S. 50 West, Hillsboro.
Rev. Richard Burns will officiate with military graveside rites conducted by the Highland County Honor Guard to follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens.
Friends may call from noon until 2 p.m. Friday at the Hillsboro Freewill Baptist Church.
The Thompson Funeral Home and Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.
