Edward R. Purdin, 86, of Greenfield, died Thursday, July 7, 2011 at Hearth and Care of Greenfield.

He was born April 23, 1925 in Greenfield, the son of Leroy and Amy (Pigg) Purdin.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the China, Burma and India Theatre. He was a former employee of American Crayon Corp. of Sandusky. He was a former member of VFW Post 4736 and Concerned Veterans of Greenfield.

He is survived by two stepsons, Joseph (Cheryl) Garvie of Lynchburg and Gary (Pattie) Garvie of Hillsboro; eight grandchildren, Susan Weldishofer, Matt (Kim) Garvie, Gregory Garvie, Russell Williams, Linda Custis, Dyann Williams, Angela (Scott) Chaney and Steve (Sara) Garvie; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Delbert (Brenda) Purdin of Webster, Fla. and Glenn (Roberta) Purdin of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Mary Jane Purdin, on Dec. 21, 2010; one stepdaughter, Winona Joanne Williams; four brothers, Paul Eugene, Albert Elmo, Marmion Leroy and John R.; and both parents.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at the Murray-Fettro Funeral Home in Greenfield with Rev. Bob Stevens officiating with burial to follow in the Greenfield Cemetery, where military rites will be performed by the Concerned Veterans of Greenfield.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Tuesday until the time of service.
