Dr. Charles E. Buck

Charles E. Buck Ph.D, Professor Emeriti, University of Maine-Orono, Molecular and Biomedical Sciences, passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012 at his home in Stillwater, Maine.

The son of Inez and Robert, Dr. Buck was born in Temvik, N.D. and raised on a farm in Solen, N.D.

He received his undergraduate degree from North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D. He subsequently served in the Navy during WWII as a lieutenant and was a weather man in Kodiak, Alaska. Following the war, he attended The Ohio State University in Columbus, where he was awarded a PhD. While attending school in Ohio, Charles met, and in 1948, married Elizabeth McClure, who survives him. After completing his studies in 1951 at Ohio State, Dr. and Mrs. Buck moved to Maine, where he taught at the University of Maine for 30 years. There he inspired many students with his enthusiasm and skill for bacteriology, virology and cell culture. An avid rock hound, he enjoyed traveling to the western states, and to western Maine, gathering rocks to polish and make jewelry with his wife and family. He was also for a time a Maine swim official, in support of his sons’ involvement in aquatics. Other hobbies included furniture crafting, gardening and managing the family tree farm in Ohio.

He will be laid to rest in the Hillsboro Cemetery near the tree farm, which he and Elizabeth love so much. 

Other surviving family members include his brothers, Ardith and Walter; his sons, Charles, Robert and Mark; and his grandson, David. 

Funeral services were held 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21 at the Church of Universal Fellowship, 82 Main Street, Orono, Maine with the Rev. Lorna Grenfell, minister and celebrant.
