Donald Roads McCoppin, 103, of Hillsboro passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2011.
He was born Oct. 9, 1907 in Hillsboro, the son of Roscoe Allen McCoppin and Elsie Mae Roads McCoppin.
Mr. McCoppin, upon graduating from Hillsboro High School in the class of 1925, attended Miami University and later Wilmington College, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in education. He later did graduate work at Ohio State University and University of Cincinnati.
He spent most of his working career in teaching. His first employment was at Tiltonsville, Ohio where he taught all eight grades in a one-room school house. He was then employed in 1931 at Frankfort, where he taught 7th and 8th grad math, English and history. In 1937, he became the elementary principal at Highland and later taught math, algebra, trigonometry and geometry until 1953, when he purchased an insurance agency.
He continued the insurance agency until 1962, when he returned to teaching at Greenfield where he taught mathematics and physics until his retirement in 1976. He then taught mathematics and physics at Southern State Community College for the next nine years.
During his working years he was always active in community affairs. He is a charter member of the Leesburg Lions Club, former president of the Highland County Board of Health, President of the Greenfield McClain Teachers Association and was twice master of the Masonic Lodge F. & A.M. No 78 at Leesburg. He is a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, teaching a Sunday school class in Leesburg for 30 years. Upon retirement from public education he and his wife moved to Hillsboro and moved their membership to The Hillsboro First United Methodist Church in 1972.
He was blessed with a good mind up to the time of his death; a dedicated father and grandfather, an avid reader, politically active and a loyal follower of the Ohio State University football team. His football interests started when he was the starting quarterback of the Hillsboro High School football teams of 1923 and 1924.
He was preceded in death by his wife Alma Haines on July 30, 1997 after 68 years of marriage. To their marriage were three children all surviving. Frances (Donald) Colasurd of Columbus; Patricia (Robert) Donnelly of Springfield and Donald A (Elisabeth) McCoppin of Mason. Also surviving are eight grandchildren 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 22 at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Rev. Derek Russell will officiate. Burial will follow in the Hillsboro Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro.
Masonic Lodge services will be held at 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
