David Franklin Leaverton, 83, of Greenfield, passed away Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012 at Edgewood Manor of Greenfield.

He was born on July 8, 1929, in Greenfield, the son of John Adrian and Maggie (Young) Leaverton.

He was a barber for 58 years, where he owned his barber shop for 54 years and was a barber in several other locations. He was a pianist and he served as the choir director at several different churches in the Greenfield area, and enjoyed singing with his wife and children, as they performed in the Leaverton Family Singers, which was a group that performed gospel music at surrounding churches and recorded an album. He shared his musical talents by singing at local nursing homes and presiding over a square-dancing club with his wife for several years.

He attended Edward Lee McClain High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He is survived by one son, David (Sue) Leaverton, Jr. of Greenfield; one daughter, Debora (Randy) Wright of Greenfield; eight grandchildren, Randy (Jessica) Wright, Jr. of Good Hope, Crystal (Andy) Everhart of Clarksburg, April Leaverton of Greenfield, Tylor Wright of Greenfield, Lucy (Joshua) Bromer of New Orleans, La., Aaron (Andrea) Kellis of Chicago, Ill., Jessica Leaverton of Greenfield, and Isaac Leaverton of Lima; four great- grandchildren, Haylie Everhart, Renae Wright, Corban Bromer, and Emma Wright; two sisters, Betty Bryant of Danville and Marcelene Lawwell of New Petersburg; several nieces and nephews; two brothers-in-law, John Smith of Florida, and Loren Karnes of Hillsboro; three sisters-in-law, Roberta Karnes of Hillsboro, Romaine Smith of Lyndon, and Norma Smith of Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Luella Leaverton, on June 5, 2010; both parents; five brothers-in-law, Bill Lawwell, John Bryant, Arnold Smith, Mark Smith, and Lloyd Smith; and one sister-in-law, Jane Smith.

Service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23 at the Murray-Fettro Funeral Home in Greenfield, with the Rev. Wayne Combs officiating. Burial will follow at the Greenfield Cemetery, with military rites to be provided by the Concerned Veterans of Greenfield.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday.
