Charles W. Sawyer, 90, of Hillsboro, died Thursday evening July 14, 2011 at the Laurels in Hillsboro.
He was born Sept. 27, 1920 in Cincinnati, the son of the late Daniel and Lake Jarvis Sawyer.
Mr. Sawyer had worked for Cincinnati Builders Supply for over 30 years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, having fought in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe, receiving the American Campaign Medal and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Stars decorations and citations. He was a member of the VFW Post 4396.
He is survived by his wife, Mary F. Garrett Sawyer, whom he had married on Dec. 18, 1945 in Cincinnati; one son, Jack (Angie) Sawyer of Hillsboro; one daughter, Sheila (Jack) Elam of Mason; four grandchildren, Shawna (Mike) Miller of Cincinnati, Jack C. Sawyer II of Cincinnati and Brian Elam and Sarah Elam of Mason; several great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Moore of Indiana and Mary Manning of Hustonville, Ky.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Ethan Scott Sawyer in 1995; two brothers, Frank and Daniel Sawyer; and one sister, Virginia Asbury.
Services will be held noon Tuesday, July 19 at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Pastor Danny Morgan will officiate. Burial with military honors presented by the Highland County Honor Guard will follow in the Union Cemetery near Taylorsville. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until noon on Tuesday at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro.
