Bill Horne (William Richard Horne, Jr.), 70, of Hillsboro, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010 at Bethesda North Hospital in Cincinnati.
He was born Oct. 21, 1940 in Covington, Ky., the son of William Richard and Kathryn Horne, Sr.
Professor Horne, a graduate of Whiteoak High School, had been an associate professor of economics at Southern State Community College for more than 25 years. Bill served the college as an educator and an advisor for student organizations. He also served as the faculty coordinator for the business program, and served as adviser for Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Bill graduated from Central State University with a 4.0 and was valedictorian of his class. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in management from Central State University, and his Master of Science degree from the University of Dayton. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had owned and operated a small business in Highland County. He grew up in the Sugar Tree Ridge community on the Horne family farm off Miller's Chapel Road in Concord Township. He was a member of the Highland County Democratic Party Central Committee and was a 2010 candidate for Ohio's 86th House District. He was also a member of the Ohio Education Association and the National Rifle Association; started Students in Action and Safe Trick-or-Treat at Southern State Community College; a Master Life Bridge Player; a longtime hog farmer; recorded Tamworth Gains Champion and member of the Tamworth Hall of Fame; written many articles for Rory Ryan and was a longtime newspaper columnist for The Highland County Press and other area publications, including The Sabina Advertiser and The Informer in West Union and has been published in several magazines.
Bill is survived by his wife, Connie Ervin Horne; mother Kathryn "Sis" Horne of Hillsboro; daughter Kathleen Horne of Piqua; stepson Benjamin Ervin of Baton Rouge, La.; grandson Zach Ward of Piqua; sister Sr. Mary Jane Williams of Hillsboro; brother Jim Horne of Hillsboro; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews; and many close friends.
Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010 at the Edward K. Daniels Auditorium at Southern State Community College in Hillsboro. The family will receive friends from noon until the time of service at 3 p.m. in the auditorium.
Memorial donations are directed to the humanitarian cause of the donor's choice.
