A warning to Republicans
To the editor:
The Republican Party needs to quickly return to the core values that made it successful in the beginning. Members of this party lack the blind loyalty that is seen in the opposition. We are thinking individuals who are Republicans for a reason, not because our fathers and grandfathers were
Republicans. At one time our values were what united us: we were united in principles and purpose. We believed that the purpose of government was to provide freedom from foreign powers, to protect us from oppression by our own government through a heavy tax burden or unnecessary restrictions, to facilitate prosperity though economy conducive to the free market, to protect the sanctity of all human life, and to grant us the right to pursue happiness by interfering as little as possible in our lives.
Both parties have evolved to a different level. The devil was indeed in the details, and his name was Power, and his tool was promise. Soon the political arena changed from ideals to the mentality of a sports team of "us verses them." Just cheer for the red or the blue! Still the Republican Party maintained a semblance of dignity, clinging to our "guns and Bibles" so to speak. Most were motivated to protect the sanctity of life of all ages, to uphold the moral structure upon which the country was founded, to advocate limited government, and to protect the corporations which provided jobs. On the other hand, the opposition chose to disregard the rights of the unborn by using the age of the tiny being to define human life. To defend the brutal act of infanticide, they chose the euphemism of freedom to choose.
They chose to ignore the teachings of the Bible regarding relationships between genders and defended this immorality under the same euphemism of freedom. They chose to expand government to monitor every facet of the individual's life and impose a hefty tax to pay the salaries of those who performed this disservice while vilifying and dismantling the corporations by regulations, taxes, and unions that promoted consistent and rapid raises in salaries of the workers until the unprofitable corporations disappeared altogether. Corporations are not charitable institutions, and when there is no profit in its operation, it closes.
Promises weighed heavily on the side of this latter party which granted favors on each of these liberal objectives, and the voters who had obtained these goodies, voted at the poles for those who promised more goodies - more raises, more benefits, more government money to come their way. Hence, the Democratic Party thrived. Those who had worked hard, saved their money, reinvested, and prospered must now be taxed even more to support the greedy, myopic, jobless individuals. Greed is such an insatiable hunger. Apparently, government is now the only business left in this country. The Republicans might have prided themselves on moral fortitude and far-sightedness had they stayed the course until the nation realized where greed had gotten them. But to combat the opposition, the Republican Party practiced the same ploy of playing the power game. By choosing party favorites over individuals with true character, the party chose those whose promises to return to core values were quickly broken once in office.
The Independents realized the dilemma and hoped to offer an alternative to the type of voter who had had to hold his nose to vote for the lesser of two evils. This third party served only to split the Republican party. Enough people still had a conscience left to accomplish this, thus handing the election to the Clinton administration. The Republican party learned nothing. The alarm had gone off but the party blamed Ross Perot and pushed the snooze button. Now, the Tea Party wants to sound another alarm. Listen to the Heritage Foundation and other worthy resources expressing the voice of the people!
We want to be reunited around our values as indeed one nation under God, not the nation going under! What once united us is now
what divides us. Quit playing with the power tool and get back on course. If we lose, we lose, but at least let us go out in a blaze of glory, united by
the things worth dying for.
Sincerely,
Glenna Walters
