Speak up on local political races

To the editor:
We have a county commissioner election race between incumbent Gary Heaton and challenger Jeremy Shaffer.
This is where YOU get your voice in
your government. Your vote really DOES make a difference at this level. Highlanders should USE their vote – not lose it or waste it because they feel like they don’t know anything about the candidates except which political party they are registered with.
Yes, both candidates will put out the usual campaign “advertising” and, yes, that’s pretty shaky grounds for choosing how to vote. It’s as bad as
voting for someone purely because of their political party. But Highlanders can fix that problem.
If Highlanders will just “respond” with their knowledge and opinions on the newspaper announcements for each candidate it won’t be long before there
is a long list of real-life personal experiences and ideas about both candidates that other Highlanders can use to decide their vote.
YOUR knowledge of, and experience with, these local candidates all matter – put it out there so other Highlanders can read and assess and
benefit from it so they can feel confident in using their vote. In the Grand Scheme of Things it’s more important that you speak up than whether you
happen to be “pro” or “con” on any particular candidate.
It doesn’t have to be long or “flowery”. Ms. Carolyn Hastings and a “Captain Obvious” have both written splendid responses on Mr. Heaton’s
announcement article. A Mr. Cold Day (et al) has a fine response on Mr. Shaffer’s announcement. It is the DISCUSSION that is valuable, not the
words. Say what you know and think and you’ll be a big help to your fellow Highlanders. C’mon, Highlanders! Saddle up!
Sincerely,
Jim Moore
