Reader responds to columnist's 'rants'

To the editor:
In replying to your comments (read rants), Mr. Deters, I am reminded of when on a vacation with our dog along. At rest areas, I would pick up her poop. (She is a German shepherd so like you she was generous with her leavings.) This was a somewhat distasteful task but a necessary one, because after all we can’t just let crap accumulate. Some of your examples I have no experience in, so I won’t be able to respond to these, and some I am very familiar with. So with this in mind, I will try to put your examples in perspective.
Health insurance claim: Unfortunately, I have had a lot medical problems, but through it all I hardly had any claim problems. Where a clarification was necessary, it was either a phone call or returning a form sent to me.
Loan modification: No experience.
Loan closings: Having bought and sold many properties and vehicles, I agree there seems to be too much paperwork involved. I’m guessing the majority of it is bank boilerplate but some is for the protection of the loan consumer. While repeatedly signing one’s name is a chore, it is hardly “insane.”
Government agency approvals: This topic is too vast and vague to address properly. But for zoning or regulatory approval, you generally submit the proper paperwork to the proper board or agency and they either decide for or against it after considering the ramifications of the request.
Settling a case: No experience, I am not a “ tort lawyer” but am glad you just got a few large fees.
Insurance company moving target: Not sure of your complaint here but as a lawyer, you must realize the redundancy of forms, procedures, and protocols.
Starting a business: No experience, but have no doubt your seminar would long.
Tax preparation: I have always done my own taxes. It became more complicated when I got into rental properties, but the information to complete the necessary forms and schedules is readily available to anyone willing to seek it out and apply it.
Kids in school: Not in many years.
Police pull over, traffic ticket: Have had this experience a few times. You want the “good old days” when murderers and rapists could go on their merry way because a warrant check wasn’t possible? I don’t think this unreasonable and am glad the technology exist. If the delay annoys you, obey the traffic laws.
Retail stores: The times I have been ask for information have either been for check cashing or like at Lowe’s they ask for your phone number for marketing purposes. Do you take a check from a stranger without a little inquiry?
Social Security card: Having never lost mine, I never needed a replacement. Perhaps you should have told them of your royal status as a lawyer and radio personality and you may not have had to wait among less important people.
Employment forms: Generally all the jobs I have had (read many) I filled out an application, a tax form, insurance form, and perhaps an acknowledgement of safety procedures. Small trade-off for gainful employment
Military buddy: Having been in the military I know they have their own ways, however when on active duty and much later dealing with the V.A. you learn to go with the flow. If your friend is having difficulty remaining sane in the wake of forms churned up by the D.O.D. boat there are veteran’s advocates available, maybe you could help him get in touch with one.
Obamacare: I have considered the health care plan and on whole find it has much needed reforms. I do think there should have been more done to rein in the greed of “tort lawyers.”
I.R.S. code and Bible: Have know idea what the relevance of this comparison is. Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and unto God what is God’s.
Onerous laws: Don’t really know what to say here, but would like to point out that the vast majority of legislators are lawyers. Go figure.
Dizzy water: With all due respect to your father, if that’s your greatest speech, well…
Modern maladies: I agree. However, I do think the portions and content of some restaurants are ridiculous. Do we really need a half-pound burger, three slices of cheese, smothered in bacon, and dipped in butter?
Montana move: I’m sure they would love to have you out there, and if flying is a problem we can put on a benefit to rent you a U-Haul.
Sincerely,
Ken Rentz
