McClain graduate laments village's condition

I recently attended a class reunion at Edward Lee McClain High School in Greenfield.
I graduated in 1955 and visited Greenfield sometime after being discharged from the Navy. I had not been back since that time. As I approached Greenfield, the more excited I became. I was in no way prepared for what I observed upon entering Greenfield. The town I once knew had drastically changed, and not for the good!
The downtown district was very rundown, as were many of the weeds growing! The city streets were deplorable, as were the sidewalks. I've never seen a town in such bad condition. Where I once lived with my grandmother, was almost unrecognizable.
It is very hard for me to comprehend how the good people of Greenfield could allow their town and community to become what it is. Several of my classmates attending the reunion made the same comments as contained in this letter. I wondered if Greenfield had a city manager or economical development program? There certainly has to be a city
council? It is very apparent this "downslide" began long before our economy took a downturn. I and many others were very downhearted in what we saw.
I have always had a special place in my heart for Greenfield and Edward Lee McClain High School. I believe every young person that attended this school has a great love and respect for it. We were fortunate to have had that privilege and honor. There is not another school in the country that can compare to it. I am concerned: if Greenfield continues this "downslide," what will happen with our beloved Edward Lee McClain High School in the future? City and county officials should become very concerned!
The people that are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the school and grounds can be extremely proud of the job they have done. It is absolutely immaculate. For myself and former students, we congratulate you on a job well done! Thank you so much, it all looked exactly the same as it did in 1955. Your efforts have been well noticed. Again, thank you!
I'm sorry if this letter offends anyone. If it does, I would suggest you take a look at your property and ask yourself if it is a good representation of the greatest high school in the country?
