Lady Mustangs top Hillsboro in Highland County Shootout

HILLSBORO — After the first half, the Hillsboro Lady Indians had possession of the lead … but in the second half, the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs scored enough to jump ahead and hold onto the lead as they left Hillsboro High School with a 43-39 victory in the nightcap of the Highland County Shootout.
For one half, the Lady Indians (2-7) led 20-17, but following being held to five points in the third quarter while LC scored 15 points in the same span, the Lady Indians just weren't able to overcome the LC attack in the final 16 minutes.
LC (6-2) was led in scoring by senior Laney Lewis with a game-high 24 points. Lewis had balanced scoring in each of the four quarters as she totaled six points in the first, seven in the second, six in the third and finished with five points in the final eight minutes. The senior finished 10-of-14 from the free-throw line.
"Laney played well. We needed her to play post in the second half, and the third quarter was big for us," LC head coach Whitney Lewis said. "Coming out in the second half down three, we knew Hillsboro would play us tough, and they gave us a good game."
The contest was close throughout the opening half, with LC leading 10-9 after the first frame. Emma Setty, who totaled eight points, was first to score in the game, but was answered by Hilsboro's Trista Rhodes. Lewis put LC back in front, but the score was tied again with a bucket from Britney Bowen with 5:57 on the clock. Rhodes totaled 13 points, and Bowen finished with four.
Later in the frame, Lewis scored a three-point play, along with another connection from the free-throw line for a lead of 8-4. LC eventually moved to a 10-5 advantage with points by Setty, but the frame ended with baskets by Taylor Stanforth and Rhodes.
It was the Lady Indians who led the second quarter with an 11-point frame, while holding LC to seven points, all of which were scored by Lewis.
As for HHS, the quarter was led by Kaylynn Bell, who scored nine of the 11 points, as she was 4-of-4 from the line in the second frame. Bell led HHS with 15 points, including two 3-pointers, along with being 7-of-12 from the free-throw line.
Madison Snyder scored the other two HHS points in the quarter.
"Our girls keep battling, and I'm proud of the way they are playing, but we have to start winning these close games," HHS head coach JR Moberly said. "We are getting closer, but we've got to be able to win these type of games.
"I really appreciate the fact they are playing hard, and they get after it. I know they were tired after having a game the night before, but we've just got to find a way to win the close ones."
Then came the third frame for LC, the quarter that put them ahead enough to overcome a strong fourth frame by HHS.

In the third, Lewis and Stewart combined for the first four points, with a jumper from Stewart putting LC back in the lead at 21-20 with 4:36 on the clock. Sarah Rosselott followed by extending the LC advantage to five points, but two points by HHS senior Alex Stratton stopped what was an LC 8-0 run.
Lewis and Setty eventually put LC ahead 27-22, but Rhodes cut into the lead again with two free-throw conversions. Morgan Fittro sank a 3-pointer with 42 seconds to move ahead 31-24. LC eventually moved to an eight-point lead with a free throw by Stewart.
HHS rallied in the final frame, outscoring LC 14-11. The closest HHS came to tying LC was getting to within three points on two separate occasions.
Leading HHS in scoring during the fourth was Rhodes with seven points. Bell added five points, and Bowen scored two in the final frame.
"If we learn how to win the close games, more wins will come our way," Moberly said.
In the fourth for LC, Lewis had five of the 11 points added to their lead, with Setty, Fittro and Little scoring two.
"In the second half, we got to go through our offense, and we had to fight for everything we got," Lewis said. "We got to play our tempo in the second half."
For the game, LC totaled 28 rebounds and 11 turnovers.
LC will next play on Dec. 28 when they host Whiteoak in the Wilkin Scholarship Tournament. The winner will play in the championship game the following day (Dec. 29), and the loser will play in the consolation game also on Dec. 29.
HHS plays again on Jan. 3, 2013 when they host Waverly.
