Indians split SCOL tri-match

In an important South Central Ohio League tri-match at Madison-Plains High School Thursday night, the Hillsboro Indians split the event, as they defeated the Madison-Plains Golden Eagles but fell to the Miami Trace Panthers.
The tri-match for positioning in the league standings went the way of the Indians when they faced the Golden Eagles, as they won with a score of 73-0.
Against MP, Dillon Hunick (138) defeated Tim Violet by a 9-4 decision. Craig Jackson followed with a 10-6 decision over Joe Datz.
Kordell Ford (152) won 8-4 in his match with Joe Datz, and Conner Johnston won by a pin fall (4:26) against Andrew Bevan of MP.
Darian Shumacker (170) won at the 1:27 mark via pin fall over the Golden Eagles' Roger Lee Griffin.
Jacob Lerch, Jesse Hale, Cody Whaley and Stanley Burns all won via forfeit for the Indians, while Drew Huffman (182) pinned Robbie Miller (MP) at the 5:30 mark of the match in the third period.
Skylar Murphy won his match in 19 seconds with a pin fall, and Ryan Kelley (120) won by a 10-0 decision.
Also for HHS, Brandon Carter (106) and Matt West (126) each won via forfeit.
[[In-content Ad]]Against Miami Trace, the Indians didn't fare as well as they were defeated by a score of 36-23.
Against the Panthers, Whaley began things with a 7-4 win over McKay at the 132-pound class. Hunick followed with a 13-5 decision over Price at 138 pounds.
Jackson (145) lost a close and competitive match to Litteral, 10-8 as Jackson led 2-0 after the first round. That was followed with Jackson adding five more points in the second, and Litteral scoring seven points in the same second round. In the third 2:00 span, each wrestler added one point to their total, but a takedown by Litteral in the overtime round gave him the win.
Ford lost an even closer match, falling to Miller by a 6-5 decision. Miller led 3-2 after the first round and added two points in the second, while Ford scored a point with an escape. In the third round, even though Ford outscored his opponent, 2-1, it wasn't enough for the win.
Johnston lost by a 10-8 decision to Grooms of MTHS. The score was tied at 2-2 in the first round, and Johnston added four points in the second, while Grooms added two, giving Johnston a 6-4 advantage. In the third round, Grooms outscored Johnston, 6-2 for the decision win.
Also for HHS, Schumacker lost by a pin fall to Gilbert, and Burns lost via major decision to Teasley.
Huffman fell by a 6-3 decision, as he led 2-1 after the first round but trailed 4-2 at the conclusion of round two. In the third, Jones of MT scored two more points while holding Huffman to one for the MT win at 182 pounds.
Murphy won by pin fall for the Indians at 50 seconds in the 220-pound match, and Botorff pinned Hale (HHS) for a 285-pound win.
Carter won his 106-pound match with a 39-second pin fall for the Tribe, and Duffy defeated West at 126 pounds by a 10-4 decision. Laytart won with a 12-4 decision over Warrington, and Kelley won for the Indians at 9-1 against Fox at 120 pounds.
MT also defeated the Golden Eagles in the third team match of the evening by a 70-3 score.
Currently, the Washington Blue Lions (who are the defending champions) and Miami Trace are ahead of the Indians in the SCOL standings. The Blue Lions of Washington defeated McClain and London on Thursday in their SCOL tri-match at McClain High School.
HHS will wrestle again Friday, Jan. 11 when they travel to Wilmington.
Next Thursday (Jan. 17), the Indians will wrestle at McClain High School when they face the host Tiger squad and the Paint Valley Bearcats in a tri-match.
On Saturday, Jan. 19, the Indians will wrestle in the annual Western Brown Hammer & Anvil Invitational, starting at 9:30 a.m.
HHS will follow that with a match at East Clinton on Thursday, Jan. 24. HHS will have their second and final home match on Thursday, Jan. 31 when they host Clinton-Massie and Washington in an SCOL tri-match.
