Final quarter sends Indians to loss against Red Raiders

HILLSBORO — The new year hasn't been so kind to the Hillsboro Indians.
Since the holiday break ended, the Hillsboro Indians have had their struggles late in games, and that pattern continued Saturday evening as they lost a five-point lead with under four minutes left in regulation, leading to a 50-42 loss to the London Red Raiders.
The Indians (1-5, 5-6) led the Red Raiders at the conclusion of the first three quarters and even held a five-point lead (39-34) with 3.3 left in the fourth following points in the paint by Jordan Captain.
That lead quickly evaporated as the final 2:20 of the game was all London as they scored 16 straight points, capitalizing off HHS turnovers to take a double-figure lead and the win.
"We were up five, there was a five-point swing in their favor and we proceeded to turn the ball over two or three times against their press … the same press that we hadn't had much trouble with for 29 minutes," Hillsboro head coach Brett Prince said. "I don't know if we panicked or got nervous ... I don't know.
"They had big-time players step up and make shots, and we proceeded to give the ball back to them. When you play your butt off for 29 minutes and do most of the things you are supposed to do … it seems like we just threw it all away in the last couple minutes."
London's (2-5, 4-8) run began with a 3-pointer by Kyle Fisher, followed almost a minute later with another trey by Fisher, taking advantage of an HHS travel 14 seconds earlier. Fisher followed those points with a layup and a 42-39 lead.
From there, HHS had consecutive turnovers, including an over-and-back call that none of the Indians' fans agreed with.
After that, London hit eight straight free throws to seal the win. Reese Leibreich scored the final points of the game with a 3-pointer for HHS.
Since returning from the holiday break, the Indians are 0-4, all league losses to Miami Trace, Madison-Plains and this weekend to East Clinton and LHS.
"We've had a halftime lead three straight games," Prince said. "We didn't feel like we needed to make a lot of halftime adjustments in any of the games because we were successful in what we were doing.
"It comes down to execution at the end of the game and putting the right kids in the right spots to get the job done. I've got to do that. We'll have to watch the film and learn from it. Close games are won with execution, and execution is taught by the coach, and we've got to get better in that area."

Brok Bennett led the Red Raiders with 20 points, with all his points coming in the final three quarters, including two 3-pointers in the second frame and a 6-of-6 performance from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.
Fisher followed with 14 points, as 12 of those points came in the final eight minutes, including two 3-pointers. Zac Carey also finished in double figures for the Red Raiders with 12 points, as eight of those points were scored in the first quarter.
HHS was led by Jarrod Hart with 20 points as his final nine points all came via three pointers. Hart was also 7-of-7 from the free-throw line. Next in scoring for HHS were Jordan Captain with nine and Zach Young with eight.
As for the Indians in the first three frames, their best was the first quarter as they led 16-8 at the conclusion of the eight-minute frame.
Trey Moberly was first to score for HHS, followed by two free throws by Hart, and later Captain contributing two points and Hart, again, scoring three points on a put-back bucket off his own rebound and the ensuing free throw as he was fouled during the put-back.
London made it a 9-4 score, but a layup by Captain with 3:59 on the clock put HHS ahead seven points.
Hart and Young ended the HHS first with two free throws by Hart and a 3-pointer from Young with 4.3 left in the quarter.
In the second, the Red Raiders outscored the Indians 14-11, making it a 25-19 deficit with a 3-pointer by Bennett and a jumper off a lob pass by Carey with 2:39 left in the half. London ended the second frame with a 3-pointer by Bennett with 1:19 on the clock.
In the third, there were a combined nine points scored in the quarter with Hart scoring the Indians' lone points with a 3-pointer at the 6:53 mark of the quarter. HHS didn't score again until the 5:40 mark of the fourth frame off a free throw by Captain.
For LHS in the third, they had four points from Bennett and two by Carey as they made it a two-point game with HHS leading 30-28.
The Red Raiders ended the game 8-of-11 from the free-throw line, while HHS was 10-of-16.
In the freshman game, HHS won 33-24 as HHS was led by Brown with 18 points. LHS was led by Jones with 18.
The JV game saw LHS win, 27-23. Leading HHS was Alex VanZant with eight, and for LHS, Newman led with seven.
HHS will play again on Friday as they travel to Clinton-Massie for a SCOL game. On Saturday, the Indians and Falcons will do a reverse as CM will travel to take on the Indians at HHS in a makeup game.
