Consistent scoring leads McClain past Lady Indians

HILLSBORO — It wasn't easy for the McClain Lady Tigers, but they used consistent scoring by adding runs in five of seven innings played to gain a 12-5 South Central Ohio League win over the host Hillsboro Lady Indians.
McClain (1-2, 3-3), who now have won three straight games, was hot from the start as they led off the game with a triple by Alli Willett, and the Lady Tigers never looked in the rearview mirror as they tallied two runs in the first inning and for an encore added three runs in the third and four more in the fourth for a lead of 9-1 after four innings.
As for that early scoring, following the three-base hit by Willett, Cierra Landrum sacrificed over Willett to second with a bunt. Following a single by Shania Massie and a second out, Morgan Dettwiller batted in Willett and Massie for a 2-0 lead.
In the third, MHS added three runs with Landrum, Massie and Sarah Thompson all rounding the bases as Landrum began the inning by taking first on an error. Massie followed with a walk, and Thompson loaded the bases with a walk.
Dettwiller added to her totals as she singled, knocking in two more runs. Caitlyn Lovett singled in Thompson for the Lady Tigers' fifth run of the game. Dettwiller, a senior, finished 3-for-4 while being hit by a pitch. She collected four RBIs and one run.

Willett, Landrum, Thompson and Dettwiller continued their dominance of the game, as the top five spots of the order scored the first nine MHS runs, including the aforementioned runs of the fourth inning.
The other MHS runs came in the fifth (Massie), sixth (Savannah Anderson) and seventh (Lovett). Massie went 2-for-3 with three runs and two walks.
Also producing at the plate for MHS was Katy Unger, who went 3-for-5.
For the Lady Indians (2-1, 4-3), their scoring didn't go as well as they had one run in the third by Ali Stratton and three in the fifth by Taylor Moberly, Erin Hagan, Lily Marshall and Amber Everhart, as all five of the HHS runs were unearned.
One big play in the fifth was a throw by Willett from the outfield to Massie at home plate, preventing another run from scoring in a play at the plate.
The Lady Indians had five hits from five different batters including Stratton, Madison Snyder, Hagan, Haylee Wehrung and Everhart.
Landrum gained the win in the circle. She pitched all seven innings, allowing five runs (none earned) on five hits and one walk. Landrum, a senior, struck out four.
The loss went to Kerstin Thornburgh as she pitched four innings. Pitching in three innings of relief was Hanna Breeden.
This past weekend, HHS split a doubleheader with Amelia, losing game one, 11-10, and winning game two, 15-7. MHS swept a doubleheader this weekend by scores of 9-3 and 27-4.
