7-run inning gives McClain season sweep over Hillsboro

GREENFIELD — The fourth inning by the McClain Lady Tigers gave them the lead, but a fifth-inning double by senior Morgan Dettwiller closed the book on the McClain regular season, giving MHS a 10-0 victory over the Hillsboro Lady Indians, Tuesday on Senior Night.
MHS (8-6, 13-7) scored in three of the five innings played, with their biggest inning coming in the third as they recorded seven runs, but it was the fifth which sealed the deal as Alli Willett and Cierra Landrum each forced four-pitch walks to begin the inning.
Following two consecutive outs, which allowed both runners to reach second and third base, it was Dettwiller who made it a memorable night for her and fellow senior Landrum as she sent the ball to left field on a 1-1 count, scoring both Willett and Landrum to complete the season sweep of their South Central Ohio League rival.
"The seniors on this teams (Landrum and Dettwiller) have given their blood, sweat and tears to this program," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "They are very successful, and this game, they continued that success with the hit to end the game by Morgan and Cierra's pitching.
"They've never had less than 10 wins in a season, and I'm proud of both of them."
The first run by the host Lady Tigers in the twice-rescheduled rivalry game came in the second inning with Katy Unger scoring on a two-out single to right field by Savannah Anderson.
As for the aforementioned fourth inning, MHS sent 13 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs on seven hits and two walks.
Caitlyn Lovett began things with a double, followed by a single by Unger. Anna Ehlers singled to score Lovett, making it a 2-0 lead. Anderson gained her second RBI as she batted in Unger for the second time, as she gained a base hit.
From there, Ehlers, Anderson, Willett, Landrum and Shania Massie all scored runs, as Massie had a three-RBI double in the inning. Ehlers, Anderson and Willett also had RBIs in the inning.
Willett, Landrum, Unger and Anderson each led MHS with two hits as the Lady Tigers totaled 13 hits and four walks.
[[In-content Ad]]Landrum was the winning pitcher as she had a no-hitter through four innings, not allowing a hit until the lead-off hitter of the fifth, where HHS gained two hits from Hanna Breeden and Madison Snyder.
"We keep waiting until the very end of games to do something," HHS head coach Katie Moberly said. "We have to keep playing from behind, and being a young team. we don't get the mentality we need until it is too late."
For the game, her final one at the MHS home field, Landrum allowed no runs on two hits and no walks. The senior finished with four strikeouts. This was the second consecutive shutout pitched by Landrum in consecutive days as MHS defeated Madison-Plains by a 10-0 score on Monday.
"Cierra's pitching the past couple games … she is just focused," Haines said. "She has shut teams' bats down."
The loss was charged to Kirsten Juillerat of HHS. The Lady Indians fall to 7-12 overall.
"We were short-handed with our pitching today due to various reasons," Moberly said. "Kirsten pitched JV all season, but she had a good effort. We are building, and it's not an overnight process. We've improved our wins each season.
"Credit Landrum of McClain … she had good control and pitched very well."
HHS will play Wednesday when they host the Washington Lady Blue Lions in a sectional tournament game, starting at 5 p.m.
MHS will play their sectional final game on Saturday when they travel to New Lexington, with an 11 a.m. start.
