SSCC trustee Dr. Ben Houser dies

Southern State Community College Board of Trustee member Dr. Ben Houser passed away Wednesday, June 1, at Clermont Mercy Hospital, his family told The Highland County Press Thursday.
He was 70.
Dr. Houser, of Mount Orab, was appointed to the SSCC board by former Ohio Governor Ted Strickland in the summer of 2008, along with former trustee Don Gephart of Blanchester and current trustee Dr. Vicki Wilson of Wilmington.
Houser was welcomed to the SSCC board by former president Dr. Sherry Stout and also served with current president Dr. Kevin Boys.
"The entire Southern State region has lost a great man," SSCC President Dr. Kevin Boys said.
"Mr. Houser was one of those people who was truly a public servant. I don't know anyone who served on more boards than Ben. His motivation was pure and simple: Service. He had a way of getting things done. We will miss him immensely."
Houser, a retired attorney, had been the vice president of Adams County Manor in West Union and Morris Nursing Home in Bethel.
He served on a number of boards and committees, including the Brown County General Hospital Board of Trustees, the Brown County Solid Waste Board, the Mount Orab Port Authority, the Brown County Board of Health and the Ohio Valley Regional Development Commission Committee for Economic Development.
Houser earned his bachelor’s degree in education at Miami University in Oxford in 1966 and then went on to receive a juris doctorate degree in 1970 from the University of Cincinnati.
He began practicing law in Brown County with the McConn and Purdy law firm. After four years with McConn and Purdy, he became a part owner in the firm of Cassity, Kelly, and Houser. He practiced law for more than 35 years.
Upon receiving the news early Thursday morning, SSCC Board of Trustees member Rory Ryan said, "I know the Southern State Community College family extends our thoughts and prayers to Ben and his family.
"Ben always put the best interests of the college students and southern Ohio's working families at the forefront of his votes and decisions. His service to Brown County and the college's five-county region, as well as his friendship, will be greatly missed."
Mr. Houser is survived by his partner, Jenny Conrad of Mount Orab; his children, John B. (Jennifer) Houser II of Batavia and Ann M. (Jeffrey Stroop) Houser of Amelia; his grandchildren, Trevor W. Houser and Benton T. Stroop; and his brother, Ralph F. Houser of Bethel.
The Megie Funeral Home in Mount Orab is serving the family.
