SSCC, SSU partner for teacher preparation program

Southern State Community College and Shawnee State University are pleased to announce the beginning of a unique education partnership.
Beginning as early as fall quarter 2011, students will be able to enroll in Shawnee State University’s bachelor-level teacher preparation program and complete most of their coursework at Southern State’s South Campus in Fincastle. Shawnee State University plans to initially offer two bachelor’s degree tracks at Southern State—early childhood education and intervention specialist (special education), with the possibility of adding a middle/high school math/science track.
A representative from Shawnee State University will visit Southern State 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, in Room 112 on the college’s South Campus, 12681 U.S. Route 62, Sardinia, to share specific details about the new agreement. Those who can’t arrive right at 5 p.m. due to work or class schedules are welcome to stop in a little later to meet with SSU advisors.
“This is a partnership we’ve wanted for quite some time” said Becky Storer, SSCC assistant professor in early childhood education. “This partnership will allow our students who are pursuing teaching professions to continue taking courses close to their home and finish their four-year degree with minimal travel.”
While students currently enrolled in Southern State’s early childhood education program will be well prepared to seamlessly enter the SSU program, all students interested in the teaching field are encouraged to come and learn more about the pathway.
“The partnership was built around the idea that students would have completed a selection of Southern State’s early childhood education courses prior to entering, however we are eager to help students not currently in this track to begin mapping a plan to enter SSU’s program” said Storer. “Shawnee State will have a representative on hand on May 18th to provide application information as well as provide a glimpse of how the curriculum will be delivered.”
