The weather was perfect for the Great Strides: Taking Steps to Cure Cystic Fibrosis event held May 21 at Southern State Community College’s Fayette Campus in Washington Court House. Event organizer Chyane Collins said there were 90 participants and the current fundraising total exceeds $3,800.
Participants had the option of walking or running 5K or 10 K. The route began at Southern State, went through the Fayette County Fairgrounds, onto Clinton Avenue until they were able to begin the journey down the bike/walking trail to the Fayette Street intersection.
The event was a success in a large part due to the support of local businesses. Atkinson Automotive, CMH Regional Health System, Fayette County Memorial Hospital, Parrett Insurance, Pettit’s Enterprise, Summer Breeze Tanning, and The Rusty Keg provided sponsorship for promotional items for the participants raising a minimum of $20 in donations. Additionally, the CF Foundation provided incentives for the more successful fundraising individuals (raising $100 or more).
Everyone received a goody bag full of tokens also provided by local businesses: Fayette Home Health Care Supply, Hook’s Oxygen, Maurice’s, Pettit’s Enterprise and Southern State Community College. WCHO provided music throughout the entire event. Tim Horton’s provided doughnuts, Garland Tiling provided bottled water, and Community Markets donated much of the food served by the SSCC Respiratory Club students and part-time respiratory instructor Brittany McMahon. Susie of Miller’s Baked Goods donated the proceeds of her baked goods sold throughout the entire day. Court House Rent-All donated the helium used for the balloons placed at the start/finish location and throughout the route.
Two planning meetings took place in March and early May. Jim and Melissa Garland (parents of the late Mark Garland, a CF patient), Nikki Johnson (CMH Regional Health System), Rod Stith (Berger Health System), and various members of the SSCC Respiratory Club assisted Collins in organizing the Great Strides event.
The plans are to make Great Strides an annual event in Washington Court House. Anyone interested in participating or becoming a member of the planning committee may contact Chyane Collins at 740-333-5115 ext. 5620 or ccollins@sscc.edu.[[In-content Ad]]
