Reiber announces resignation as HCS superintendent

Hillsboro City Schools Superintendent Art Reiber annnounced his resignation, effective July 31, 2010, at Wednesday night's school board meeting.

"It is with mixed emotions that I submit my resignation," Reiber said. "I want to thank the Board of Education for the opportunity to be your superintendent these last five years. It is very difficult to say goodbye to a job that you truly enjoy. I will really miss representing Hillsboro City Schools."

The Board of Education is in negotiations with Hillsboro High School Principal Rick Earley as a possible successor to Reiber.

   Reiber submitted the following letter of resignation to the board on Oct. 21.

Dear Mr. Wilson & Board Members,

It is with mixed emotions that I submit my retirement resignation, effective July 31, 2010. I want to thank the Hillsboro Board of Education for the opportunity to be your superintendent these last five years.

I have indicated that it is with mixed emotions that I have decided to retire. It is very difficult to say "goodbye" to a job that you really enjoy. Even with some of the challenges that we have faced together, I will really miss representing Hillsboro City Schools as your superintendent.

The staff and community have been so kind and supportive, even when I made decisions that were not always popular. Hillsboro has so many wonderful people and I will always cherish the memories and friendships that have been established.

I truly feel that the future of Hillsboro City Schools is bright. Not only are our facilities second to none, but our staff has shown the commitment, dedication, and hard work as we strive to provide excellent educational opportunities for every student. I am very proud of their efforts and cooperation.

It is impossible to put into words the appreciation that I have for our Board of Education and the support that has been given to me over these last five years. I have worked with many school boards over the last 21 years as a superintendent and I can honestly say that Hillsboro's board is as good as any I have had. Thank you for your dedication and caring for the students of our district. It has been a pleasure to work with each of you, along with Susan Seipelt, Loy Lutton, and Mary Brown Turner. Thank you for your support.

Although I have mixed feelings, there comes a time when a person needs

to turn the reins over to someone with fresh energy and ideas. There are so many challenges that are coming from State and Federal unfunded mandates and financial restraints, that I question whether or not I still have the energy and compassion to fight those battles. I feel that after 40 years in education, that time has come for me to retire.

Please accept my retirement resignation, effective July 31, 2010.
