Portman fighting For federal resources to help combat drug abuse in southern Ohio

U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) was in Portsmouth over the weekend with members of the Scioto County Rx Drug Action Team to discuss ongoing community efforts to combat prescription drug abuse and other illicit drugs.
“This drug problem in southern Ohio is ruining lives, tearing families apart and imposing a heavy cost on our community. It was good to be with community leaders today who understand the problem and are committed to tackling it,” said Portman, who has a long history of working with rural communities and the drug issues they face.
Portman is trying to help the Rx Action Team obtain funding and other resources though a Drug Free Communities Grant under the Drug Free Communities Act of 1997, drug prevention legislation authored by then-Congressman Portman and signed into law by President Clinton.
“Scioto County needs the help, and needs it now,” said Portman.
Portman is also spearheading efforts to bring more federal law enforcement resources and coordination through designating Scioto County and the surrounding area a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area.
“I have been working alongside federal, state, and local officials as well as with coalition members from Scioto County, to bring the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) designation to this region.
"Through a HIDTA designation, local law enforcement will be able to share tools and coordinate with federal officials to fight this epidemic, which has hit Scioto, Adams, and other counties in Southern Ohio hard.”[[In-content Ad]]
